Louisiana executed a man convicted of murder with nitrogen gas on Tuesday evening " the state's first execution in 15 years and its first using the largely-untested method " after a raging legal battle that ended with a gas mask strapped over his face in the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola death chamber. State officials pronounced Jessie Hoffman Jr. dead at 6:50 p.m. Tuesday at Angola. He inhaled pure nitrogen gas through a mask strapped to his face for 19 minutes while pinned to a gurney, officials said, until oxygen deprivation caused him to die. Officials acknowledged that Hoffman showed "convulsive activity" as he died and that he moved and shook. d.lawyerherald.com

An appeal stated that since Hoffman is a Buddhist, his breathing and meditation practices would be disrupted by the execution process. Kill me with a firing squad, at least then, I'll be able to breathe air at the time of my death,' Hoffman requested. The state said no.

"Dead Man Walking" (1995) took place in a Louisiana death row. Sister Helen Prejean continues advocating against the death penalty.

US red states are finding different methods of execution. Perhaps we'll get to lapidation (stoning) soon: assets.ldscdn.org

So they suffocated him. Nasty.

The cruelty is the point.

The point will be underscored as some right-wing mouth-breather (no pun intended) points out that by deliberately suffocating him for sixteen minutes, he got off easier than his victim.

But we dont' have to wait for the MAGAs to take a victory lap. It's already in the article:
"We followed the protocol of Alabama," Louisiana Corrections Secretary Gary Westcott said. He called Hoffman's execution by nitrogen gas "flawless."

Why is it so hard to just not rape murder a woman and leave her body to decay in the forest. This animal would still be alive had he not done that.

Didn't Dr Death (Kevorkian) create a suicide machine that painlessly killed a person?

If some states are going to maintain capital punishment why not consider replicating that device?

While it's very hard to sympathize with almost anyone on death row, we are supposed to be better. If we are going to punish crimes against humanity with death the killing should be as humane as possible. Good old "Sparky" needs to be put out to pasture, for example.

I disagree, what makes a society civilized is the threat of a government that wields the use of the death penalty when a person violates the social contract.

Allowing only people to commit heinous murder in a civilized society is the ultimate hypocrisy.

just sayin.

You have no idea how stupid you sound. Locking someone up for murder is hardly allowing someone to commit heinous murder. Just sayin

Death by nitrogen is painless, similar to CO affixation. You don't know its happening, its slow and within in reason, painless.
