Donald Trump's former vice-president Mike Pence will receive a John F Kennedy Profile in Courage Award on Sunday for refusing to endorse false claims that the 2020 election was stolen.

"The US vice-president presides over the Senate, and it was in this role that Pence resisted calls from Trump and his supporters to try to overturn the election results.

Although there was no hard evidence to back up Trump's allegations, his supporters targeted the Congressional certification of the election, usually a routine procedure, on 6 January 2021.

Trump publicly criticised Pence and called on him to stop the certification process. Some of the Capitol rioters chanted "hang Mike Pence" as they breached security."
