Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Monday, May 12, 2025

Gov. Gavin Newsom on Monday urged California's local governments to clear homeless encampments, escalating the state's efforts to ban the growing number of makeshift camps on sidewalks and in parks that are the most visible signs of the crisis of people living on the streets. The announcement of a new model ordinance for counties, cities and towns is coupled with the release of $3.3 billion in voter-approved funds the state will make available to communities to expand housing and treatment options for homeless residents, the governor's office said in a news release. The goal is to help municipalities set "rules around encampments and establish effective enforcement procedures" prioritizing shelter and services.

Yeah, it looks like he is trying to bolster his 2028 Presidential credentials.

F the election.

The World Cup is coming.

Time to clean up.

Homelessness is a problem. But destroying encampments isn't the solution.

Gavin Newsom vowed to end homelessness in 10 years, more than 20 years ago,

Now he wants you to know that homelessness is in no way his responsibility and the cities and counties are the problem.

Now he wants to ban encampments.

The point is he's just incompetent, and he has the track record to prove it.

a) Homelessness is a bad look for a state that could be in the G-7 by itself with the FIFA World Cup approaching.
b) Economic cleansing will move the poor people away from FIFA fans and potential street crimes.
c) Democratic Californian leaders seem to have streaks of conservativism in them: Kamala Harris was hard on criminals as State AG; now Gavin Newsom seems to be hard on the homeless. These are moves to attract conservatives or swing voters in national campaigns.

If there's actually housing or camps they could be living in, I'm not too broken hearted about sending them there.

People who are broken can't always be fixed.

But the fix for homelessness is right there in the word. People need homes.

Yeah.

The 2028 political aspect of this aside ....

Do homeless people choose to be homeless?

If so, how so?

Luckily, LA is building low income, 300ft2 SROs at the bargain price of $850,000* per unit.

* This is based on the 2022 cost non-inflation adjusted.

"Do homeless people choose to be homeless?"

I suggest you go ask some and report back your findings.

I think it will be very informative for you.
