Midea is recalling 1.7 million air conditioning units because a drainage problem could expose consumers to mold. Water can pool in the appliance maker's U Window Air Conditioner and U+ Window Air Conditioner units, possibly leading to mold growth. Mold can cause respiratory issues and other infections. The CPSC has received at least 152 reports of mold buildup in the Midea AC units. 17 consumers experienced respiratory infections, allergic reactions, coughing and sneezing, or sore throats as a result of mold exposure. Along with the units sold in the US, nearly 46,000 were sold in Canada. The Midea products were sold under a range of brand names, including Comfort Aire, Danby, Frigidaire, Insignia, Keystone, LBG Products, Mr. Cool, Perfect Aire and Sea Breeze, according to the recall notice. A range of makes and models, measuring 22 inches wide by 14 inches high, are under recall. Midea toll-free number: (888) 345-0256.

... Water can pool in the appliance maker's U Window Air Conditioner and U+ Window Air Conditioner units, ...

Most, if not all, of the window air conditioners I have owned over the decades allowed the water that accumulated on the evaporator coil to pool.

Some even use the "outside fan" blades to splash that water up onto the condenser coils to help cool them.

I have never liked that pooling of water, so I have always allowed that water to drain.

A little bit of bleach once a month kills the mold or anything else growing in your AC unit.My condo has a central system but it drains through a very long pipe down two floors to the sewar system outside. Once a month I piur some bleach down the pipe to prevent the groeth of algae that clogs the system.

#5: How's the air quality in Ontario? The smoke from the Saskatoon fires were spreading in many directions.

How's the air quality in Ontario?

Not good from what I hear. Not bad here in BC so far.

My dad has a small window AC unit like this which I'll be checking. My wife and I have central AC in our building, so our concern is that the contractors flush out the system to prevent Legionella bacteria from growing in the ducts. The summer will be hot for many of us and we will need our AC.

#7: My mistake, I thought you were in Ontario. But air pollution is air pollution.

I just open a window. Here on the Lost Coast the Pacific Ocean is my AC.

But it's definitely gonna be a long hot summer for folks over on the other side of the mountains. And it's already getting hot down the there in LA.

I just open a window.

That's what I do. Even if it's 100 degrees in the afternoon it's seldom over 50 at night.
