Some may prefer it raining cats and dogs over a cold front full of falling iguanas.

Weather experts warned Central and Southern Florida residents they should be on "falling iguana watch" after temperatures dipped into the 30s and 40s on Tuesday, Nov. 11.

"The reptiles can fall out of trees and stay paralyzed on the ground, appearing dead, until the weather warms up.

Iguanas like to sleep in trees, which proves dangerous when the temperatures in the Sunshine State unexpectedly dip."

Such is the life of a cold-blooded creature.

When I first moved to FL there was a big green fella who liked to sun himself on the AC unit in the back yard. He deigned to allow me to use the yard whenever I wanted, but he wasn't going anywhere.

He didn't shoot you through a closed door and kill you?

I threatened to feed him to the gators... which were in the Everglades near Naples.

The wild life that surprised me in North Central were all the brown bears and the monkey colonies in the Ocala Nat Forest that escaped from the very wonderful Silver Springs Park in the 1930's and 40's.

The Park is really quite nice now with the Glass Bottom Boats; several movies, including Tarzan sequels, Creature from the Black Lagoon, and James Bond movies were filmed there.

This early cold snap here in CT (though, probably more of a cool-snap in Florida) is interesting.

Considering it is looking like a La Nina winter here in the NorthEast.

I went out to the garage and told my Ariens snow thrower that I appreciate all it has done for me through the winters with multiple 5"+ snowstorms, including the big 15+ plus ones.

Oddly, of late that snow thrower has been quiet. The past two winters I used it once. And that use was more to just run it than a need to clear the driveway.

As opposed to the multi-snow-storms of the past winters, when I enlisted the help of that snow-thrower to clear 5+ inches of snow from the driveway a few time (many times?) each winter.

And, fwiw, the snow flurries I see here are "lake effect" snow from the cold air flowing over the warm waters of the Great Lakes. By the time the lake effect sno gets here, we get flurries. In the Buffalo, NY snow-belt area they get inches, sometimes feet.

Let' look ...

I saw the Great Lakes for the first time two years ago, the only part of the country other than the Pacific NW I hadn't visited or lived in.

I was surprised by the excellent vineyards in NY along the shore. And the actual size of the Lakes. My favorite spot might have been Tunnel Park, MI:

I was up on the dunes seeing the largest body of fresh water I'd ever seen, but something seemed to be missing from past experiences at the Pacific, Atlantic, and the Gulf.

Took me a few seconds to realize what it was; I couldn't smell any salt in the air.

ESA Looks at Incorporating Insects Into Astronaut Diets
www.extremetech.com

... Humans have been eating insects for millennia, but despite the uncomfortable feelings a bug-based diet might evoke in cultures not used to their consumption, they could form a vital part of future astronauts' diets. A new study being conducted by the European Space Agency will explore how these miniature organisms could help recycle unsavoury compounds and create a useful protein source to supplement future space menus.

"Insects seem to cope quite well in space environments. They have a good ability to withstand physical stresses," said sa Berggren, lead author of a study published in the journal Frontiers in Physiology. Berggren also highlighted how good insects were at converting waste products that humans can't utilize into proteins and fats that we can, making them useful recyclers as well as sources of nutrition. ...

So, the ESA wants its astronauts to eat the flies it unleashes to eat the excrement of the astronauts?
