"LGB safety system failed." Do any of the technical experts here know what that means?

Sounds like they let a train go through a red signal. That is not good.

I guess it's actually LZB: Linienzugbeeinflussung

I know at the railroads I've dealt with, if an engineer takes a train even a foot past a red signal they will get 3 months off without pay. If they do it again, their railroading career is over.

The guys who direct train traffic, when they get burned out, they go to the lower stress job of Air Traffic Controller.

This is the second serious rail accident in Spain this year.
This seems to have uncovered a real problem.

By comparison, California High Speed Rail has a perfect per passenger mile safety record.

The train drivers' union warns about the outage of the LZB and rejects operating in degraded mode as a habitual practice

... The Railway Machinists Union has pointed to the failure of the LZB system in the Madrid-Seville line section as the origin of the trains having to run with the "fallback system" and has warned that working "in degraded mode cannot become a usual way of operating in the face of breakdowns".

From the organization they have stressed that "it is still too early to determine the causes" of the accident on the high-speed line, in which at least 68 people have died, although in a statement released this Wednesday they link what happened with the technical incident that affected "all the trains that were within that section".

"For this reason, work was being done with the fallback system to continue circulation in degraded conditions while work was being done to restore the system", they explained in the note. At the same time, they have censured that this type of incident is being recorded "with greater frequency" and have underlined: "This way of operating cannot be normalized". ...

Reporting the train was doing 124 mph when it hit. Ouch.

Was the signalling infrastructure capable of dealing with such speeds?

Better call China for their high speed rail safety methodology.

The problem was the signalling network was being operated in manual made and someone decided to let the train go through a red signal with no speed restrictions.

I'm not sure how that was communicated to the train. By radio? Or did someone manually change the signal to green?

I'm not sure how that was communicated to the train.

Just saw an update, the instruction to proceed was verbal.
