China canceled 12,000 metric tons of United States pork shipments amid a high-stakes trade standoff between the superpowers, according to data released Thursday. China, one of the biggest U.S. trading partners, axed 12,000 metric tons of U.S. pork orders, the data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) shows. The move represents the biggest cancellation of pork orders since the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted supply chains and stalled economies around the world, Bloomberg News reported. China, behind Mexico and Japan, was the U.S.'s third-biggest market for pork in 2024, importing some 475,000 metric tons valued at more than $1.1 billion. Read more

Houthi rebels in Yemen have shot down seven US Reaper drones in less than six weeks, a loss of aircraft worth more than US$200 million (NZ$334m) in what is becoming the most dramatic cost to the Pentagon of the military campaign against the Iran-backed militants. According to defence officials, three of the drones were shot down in the past week " suggesting the militants' targeting of the unmanned aircraft flying over Yemen has improved. The drones were doing attack runs or conducting surveillance, and they crashed both into the water and onto land, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss military operations.

If California was its own country, its economy would now rank as the fourth largest of any nation in the globe, Gov. Gavin Newsom said this week. Newsom announced the state's new economic ranking Wednesday after recently released data from the International Monetary Fund and the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis indicated that California's nominal gross domestic product now exceeds Japan's. According to the data, California's nominal GDP reached $4.1 trillion, surpassing Japan's $4.02 trillion. That places the Golden State behind only the United States at $29.18 trillion, China at $18.74 trillion, and Germany at $4.65 trillion.
Orders for durable goods, items ranging from toasters to aircraft meant to last three years or more, jumped 9.2% last month after slightly downwardly revised 0.9% gain in February, the Commerce Department's Census Bureau said on Thursday. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast durable goods orders advancing 2.0% after a previously reported 1.0% gain in February. Read more
