Six-Week Abortion Ban Takes Effect in Iowa

A law that bans almost all abortions after six weeks has taken effect in the US state of Iowa. The Republican-enacted ban was blocked after its passage last year before being upheld by the state's highest court last month.

It is among the most restrictive policies to be enforced since Americans lost the national right to abortion access two years ago.

Comments

"Before Monday, abortions were allowed through the 20th week of pregnancy in Iowa.

Iowa now joins a growing list of Midwestern states, including its neighbouring Missouri and South Dakota, that have enacted restrictions since Roe's overturn.

The ban is expected to force state residents to seek care in adjacent Democrat-led states that have taken action to maintain or expand abortion access since 2022, building pressure on providers in Illinois and Minnesota.

"As our neighbors in Iowa are stripped of their fundamental rights, my message is clear: Your reproductive freedom will remain protected in Minnesota," Governor Tim Walz posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker called the six-week abortion ban "disturbing".

"Here in Illinois, we will welcome our Iowan neighbors for reproductive freedom and whatever care they need," he wrote on X.

Iowa Republicans had passed their prohibition last summer after failing in an identical effort six years ago.

The legislation hinges on what lawmakers deemed a "detectable foetal heartbeat" - a term medical groups say mischaracterizes the electronic impulses that signify early cardiac development.

'
But polls show that nearly two-thirds of Iowans believe abortion should be legal in most or all cases."

Big Gov Republicans know what's better for women in Iowa than 2/3rds of Iowans do?

The old men pushing these laws think they know better than you do in EVERYTHING.

Highlighting the difference between what people say matters to them in polls and what matters to them in elections.

Don't act like you don't understand how gerrymandering works Eberly. In NC we have tons of issues which the majority of voters support but can't even get a hearing in the legislature because the districting is so heavily drawn in one parties favor.

I don't pretend to not understand it.

Are you saying that explains every election outcome that doesn't track with polls?

Not everyone, but when you see something that a large majority supports but the state legislature ignores, that's usually a good place to start looking.

Six weeks is way too long. Abortions can be done much faster than that.

Answering a poll is made super easy
Voting however has been made increasingly difficult for some

Only a jackass would pretend the disparity of what people say they want and what they actually end up with is down to "what matters to them in the election"

You disingenuous POS

Everyone should be excited.

Based on the current narrative, Harris just won Iowa.

@#8 ... Answering a poll is made super easy

Yup.

And that is the hurdle that pollsters are facing of late.

More specifically, those who tell the pollster one answer more as a "protest vote" than how they may be voting in November.

And that is a reason (one of many) that this far out from the election I look more to the trends in polling, and not the absolute numbers.

For example, a couple weeks ago, fmr Pres Trump was up in the general election polls by 3.1%. Now he seems to be up by only 2.0%.
(
www.realclearpolling.com ) Probably not a trend that the Trump cult would want to see.

And VP Harris has not yet really started her campaign.

I'll proffer that is not a desired trend for the Trump campaign.

Just wait until Trump wins and they take aways all this silly voting nonsense.

We people shouldn't worry about the federal government.

Leave that to the rich.

Just worry about yourselves. Because your country doesn't care about you.

We have a very gifted grand daughter who considered doing her Collegiate studies in Iowa. Her mother is a Pharmacist as are an aunt and an uncle. They all attended IOWA University and all graduated from U of Iowa.

After considering all aspects of the decision, she will be going U of Illinois. MAGA controlled (sheet hole states) states and their Universities are losing gifted students to the Blue States.

It could make a huge difference over time.

Mall of America will have to install abortion clinics on every level to handle the influx.

If recent history is anyindicator, Republicans just sacrificed Iowa in November so that Iowa men can better control their wives, daughters and sisters! Head scarves will be mandatory for women outside of the home starting in January if Trump wins in November.

It's Iowa. Generally, around 0 F for much of January so everyone will have headcovers on during the month. :)
