Trump Ignored Disaster Aid Plea from Political Rival

In early September 2020, wildfires tore through eastern Washington state, obliterating tens of millions of dollars of property, displacing hundreds of rural residents and killing a 1-year-old boy. But then-President Donald Trump refused to act on Gov. Jay Inslee's request for $37 million in federal disaster aid because of a bitter personal dispute with the Democratic governor, an investigation by POLITICO's E&E News shows. Trump sat on Inslee's request for the final four months of his presidency, delaying recovery and leaving communities unsure about rebuilding because nobody knew if they would get federal help. Trump ignored Inslee's 73-page request even after the Federal Emergency Management Agency found during weeks of inspection that the wildfires easily met the federal damage threshold for disaster aid.

FEMA should be there for all of America, not just those areas that support the person who currently occupies the Oval Office.

Politics should not enter into FEMA and Federal aid, need should be the main (only?) criteria.

This is so deserving of a rant! It isnt complicated unless your state is run by corrupt idiots like Enslee and Newsum who care more about stealing taxes from disasters than premptively correcting.

Why have west coast governors not prioritized and actually created ways to fight and spend to effectively fight wildfires? Why not spend developing immediate response "SWAT" fire fighting teams with an overwhelming capability to extinguish wild fires immediately? We need better technolgy and commitment to locate and ID fires. Combine volunteers, professionals with needed drone technology and local volunteers. We need to exstinguish them in the bud.

They lack real thinkers and doers in such leadership roles, but not shortage of politicians wrapped in destructive divisive identity politics. These governors and down office leaders need to be actual doers not political ideologues whose sole obsession is liberalism or party politics. They see their primary role as political schemers not doers. They always want public money made accessible to their cronies.

So many possible improvements needed but their leaders obsession is all leftwing politics and feeding crooks in government.

Alas.

Let's see, those on the left side of the aisle, showing solidarity with friends and helping to get their posts higher visibility by flagging here on the Retort is called "buttering up."

On Twitter, it is called Liking and Re-Tweeting.

But, apparently, flagging a post on the Retort is only okay if it is done by the usual suspects on the right, who consistently flag each other's posts.

Gotcha.

#24 | Posted by Hans at 2024-10-26 10:22 AM

I almost weighed in last week on this Lamplighter/Hans kerfluffle. It seems like a big misunderstanding to me. First of all, Lamp refers to the handle any/every poster is using right now as "your current alias". He doesn't mean by that that someone has had other user names necessarily, although if the shoe fits it might. From what I read Lamp referred to Hans' "current alias" and Hans took exception to that, but I don't think that Lamp meant it as the accusation Hans took it to be.

The second misunderstanding seems to be around what Hans perceives as Lamp's political affiliation. If I'm not mistaken, Lamp was a Republican, but Trump and the MAGA movement have so appalled and disappointed him that he is a never Trumper now. That doesn't mean, however, he is a Democrat. When I think of Lamp, I am reminded of a line in one of my favorite Leonard Cohen songs, Democracy:

And I'm neither left or right I'm just staying home tonight,
getting lost in that hopeless little screen.

www.youtube.com

I don't expect total, unquestioning political solidarity from Lamp because I won't get it, and that's okay. Friendship? I don't know if Lamo go that far, but I think we have a mutual respect for each other that has been built over time through multiple interactions on the board. I'll take it.

#27 | Posted by Hans

I'm not sure what to say to that. Lamp and I don't always agree, and he has challenged me on issues in the past. He doesn't mind if someone stands up to his challenges, and he will listen to opposing points of view provided they are delivered with supporting facts and a modicum of sincerity. At least that is my assessment. YMMV.

Ronald Reagan had an 11th Commandment: Never say anything negative about a fellow Republican.

Today, since the supporters cannot say anything positive about the Kumquat Pol Pot, they're united in their trashing of Kamala Harris.

Will Rogers once said, "I don't belong to any organized party, I'm a Democrat."

Why can't those of us on the left side of the aisle fight united against the existential threat represented by a potential re-election of Trump?

Or, are those of us on the left side of the aisle content with living in our intellectual silos, while leaving the solidarity to the Trumpanzees?

Thank you for replying, Gal_Tuesday.

So, MAGA continues its false claims that the Biden Administration has withheld disaster aid for victims of hurricanes in the SE. But in 2020, a politically motivated Trump genuinely did withhold aid for wildfire victims in the State of Washington. Leaving it up to Biden to approve that relief money months later.

It seems like anytime Trump or MAGA make an accusation, it's actually a confession.

Even then, he didn't want national testing because reports showing the extent of the pandemic would be bad for him politically.

#74 | Posted by AMERICANUNITY at 2024-10-27 02:14 PM

BTW, as we know, COVID infection and mortality rates were much higher in red states thanks to Trump's dangerous chatter and unwillingness to acknowledge the danger COVID posed to Americans of every stripe in every state. I mean, the selfish MAGAts who wouldn't even wear a mask to protect themselves and others were glaring examples of Trump's rhetoric put into action.

Not to mention how many times he tried to shoot Dr. Fauci down and actually tried to get Dr. Fauci fired for telling the truth about the deadly severity of the pandemic.

Therefore, in my opinion, if Trump is suffering from cognitive decay now, he didn't have much to start with nor was he fit for office when he was inaugurated in 2017.
