Homelessness Surged in 2024 Amid a Lack of Affordable Housing in U.S.

Homelessness in the U.S. jumped 18.1% this year, hitting a record level, with the dramatic rise driven mostly by a lack of affordable housing as well as devastating natural disasters and a surge ...

Federal officials say the United States saw an 18.1% increase in homelessness this year. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development said that federally required tallies taken across the country in January found that more than 770,000 people were counted as homeless.

..."More people than ever need help paying rent. More people than ever are becoming homeless for the first time," the National Alliance to End Homelessness, a nonprofit focused on preventing and ending homelessness, wrote on X in a post about the HUD report. ...

What is the Pres-elect Trump administration planning to do to help resolve this problem?

Houses in the United States are for wealthy people to buy and use as AirBnB rentals.

@#4 ... Houses in the United States are for wealthy people to buy and use as AirBnB rentals.

Well, yup.

But there is also this for those houses that people can afford ...

Tiny homes at risk of being stolen
www.newsnationnow.com

... Tiny homes have become targets for thieves stealing entire houses, Realtor.com reported.

In Oklahoma, a woman's dream of sustainable living was shattered when her tiny home was stolen from her locked property in Sapulpa, Okla., leaving behind cut wires and crushed cables, a Fox station reported.

Similarly, the Bennet family, who document their tiny home travels on TikTok, also had their home stolen and damaged before locating it with GPS. ...

Tiny homes seem to be promoted ...

e.g.,

Sandy tiny house has three bedrooms with room to stand
newatlas.com

... Though they are a standard feature in tiny houses, few people actually like to crawl into a loft-based bedroom. The Sandy tiny house addresses this issue by offering generous standing room in all three of its bedrooms.

The Sandy, by Indigo River Tiny Homes, is based on a triple-axle trailer, with a length of 36 ft (10 m). It's finished in smart siding engineered wood and has two storage boxes outside.

The entrance opens onto the living area, which includes a sofa for two and a little storage space, plus a TV. Nearby is the kitchen. This has solid mahogany countertops with steel sink, a microwave, an electric oven with electric cooktop, and a fridge/freezer. It also has lots of cabinetry, including a pull-out pantry. ...

Back in the day when I bought my current house, the monthly payment, even with the 12% mortgage interest rate of the time, was still less than the rent I had been paying.

More like homelessness increased during the Biden administration.

#9 | Posted by lee_the_agent at 2024-12-28 07:55 AM

With the Republicans in charge the news media and Democrats (I repeat myself) will find new concerns for homelessness, unemployment and inflation. I expect we will go back to the old definition of recession and that we will learn that our economic metrics were tabulated incorrectly. Unexpectedly.

#10 | Posted by visitor_ at 2024-12-28 12:37 PM

But at least we're spending and/or giving away hundreds of billions to blow up bunches of brown people overseas so those increasing numbers of homeless people back home can feel safe and secure during their increasing impoverishment.

I saw the signs in 2009 before I bolted SoCal for NoCal. At the time, I was paying $1600 for a 1-bed upstairs apt in a working class neighborhood next to LAX. The same apt now goes for $2700. And we wonder why the sidewalks in LA are completely covered with tents and shelters made of plastic tarps and shipping pallets. There is no more damning example of man's cold indifference to the plight of their fellow man than the sidewalks of Los Angeles. This scourge may not be all that noticeable where you live, but if this 18% remains a constant--or climbs even higher, well...

#57 | Posted by dutch46 at 2024-12-29 01:45 AM

Dutch, I know that was a harsh, and my intention was not to target you as an individual, you sound like a thoughtful person. Still, your words pegged my irony meter, do I used your post as a vehicle to vent my frustrations.

I have worked closely with the homeless community. 90% of the discourse on the homeless problem completely misidentifies the root causes of homelessness, and thus completely fails to result in real solutions, decade after decade. It is a weaponized wedge issue, and the victims never get any sustainable help.

#59 | Posted by Miranda7 at 2024-12-29 08:55 AM

With the immediate answer: NOTHING, NOTHING, NOTHING AT ALL.

You hired a loud-mouthed incompetent as president for a second time. I have to believe that incompetence is what you want. So don't get your panties in a wad when people point out that Donald sleeps until noon and then spends the rest of the day diddling himself. You people seem to love watching his diddling. He's going to find a way to charge you for that.

Just for fun, I went and looked up properties for sale in the area where I was born. It is a very remote, boring, agricultural section of Idaho.

The cheapest thing I found was a 924 square foot trailer home for $199k.

This is in a town that I thought would be a ghost town by now.
