The egg farmers are facing a conundrum.

I saw one reference that said 166 million hens have been ~culled.~

OK, aside from the diminished quantity of eggs that appear in the supermarkets, there also is a need for eggs to replace those 166 million hens. Hens don't grow on trees, they come from eggs.

So, the eggs farmers face a double hill to climb.

1) Providing eggs for consumers

2) Obtaining eggs needed to to grow the hens to satisfy (1).

OK, that was last month. Average pricing of eggs where I live are about $3.88/dozen, cheaper if you buy the 18 count. Looks like AP is using Hawaii or Alaska as their model for "average prices"

Eggs where $4.35 a dozen at the grocery store today. I sear to God most people on this site are insane, and never get out.

There was a bird flu crisis.

Nearly 200 million hens were culled due to that crisis.

So, not only are there fewer hens laying eggs for consumers, there are also fewer hens laying eggs to grow into hens to lay eggs for consumers.
