Poe's law originated in a 2005 discussion on christianforums.com, an Internet forum on Christianity. The message was posted during a debate on creationism, where a previous poster had remarked to another user: "Good thing you included the winky. Otherwise people might think you are serious."

#20 Your comment about a bad driving reminded me of something I witnessed many years ago.

I was on my way to work and was in a school zone (15MPH when flashing) when a large truck in front of me raced through the zone (my guess, even faster than the normal 35MPH speed limit).

The truck, natch, was clearly identified as a truck belonging to a locally-owned bank.

As the bank owners were family friends, I called when I got to work to let them know about the dangerous situation their clearly identified truck was creating for elementary and junior high school students in the area (the two schools right next to each other).

My friend immediately knew what I was communicating, and several weeks later, at a local restaurant, I saw my friend who told me that that driver no longer "represented" his bank. And he thanked me for letting him know.
