California taxes you on money you make in California. New York City does the same thing. When I was a kid, mom was paying New York City income tax on her New York City job while living in New Jersey.

I can't remember if California technically taxes everybody (non-Californian) like this, or if it's targeted at high salary people like pro athletes and Taylor Swift. So if California is being discretionary, then California is actually better than NYC, if you think this is unfair. Unless you think it's extra unfair to only tax the rich, which Republicans probably do.

They only ask what their country can do for them.
They don't ask what they can do for their country.

They fundamentally reject the idea that the government should be in the business of making America a better place.
