more BS from bell. Darnold earned a lot more more than just his super bowl bonus in California. He was also earning his salary which amounted to as much as $1.5M by some estimates. It also doesn't take into account any deductions he has such as covering the cost of trainers, nutritionists, publicist, etc whose services he paid for while in the state.

I did my own math and I think it's more like 2k.

Holler back the next time you turn down $188,000 because of the $2,000 Participation Trophy Fee.

Let me throw this idea out there for your consideration:

How about we start taxing the uber-wealthy who have, for the past 40 years, been able to dodge their financial responsibilities that provide them with a country that protects them and their money and their property?

Not to mention the fact that this country has given them, the uber-wealthy, a nation of publicly educated wage-earners who can afford to buy their products/services?

How about that?

Afterall, ingratitude is a Cardinal Sin. (a note for Eberly)

Not to say he didn't think it up himself!

California taxes you on money you make in California. New York City does the same thing. When I was a kid, mom was paying New York City income tax on her New York City job while living in New Jersey.

I can't remember if California technically taxes everybody (non-Californian) like this, or if it's targeted at high salary people like pro athletes and Taylor Swift. So if California is being discretionary, then California is actually better than NYC, if you think this is unfair. Unless you think it's extra unfair to only tax the rich, which Republicans probably do.

Show the math, if you can. You must understand that it's highly unusual to get taxed for more money than you earned.

As johnny_hotsauce said, he's being taxed for the money he earned while in the state. Which is the way it works for everyone.

He gets paid a salary regardless. It's built right into his contract.

" It also doesn't take into account any deductions he has such as covering the cost of trainers, nutritionists, publicist, etc whose services he paid for while in the state."

He doesn't pay any of that out of pocket. The franchise pays for all of those services.

But, yeah, a $212k tax bill for working one week in the state of California seems totally normal. /s

They don't accept that these "financial responsibilities" exist.
They only ask what their country can do for them.
They don't ask what they can do for their country.

They fundamentally reject the idea that the government should be in the business of making America a better place.
Except they also say that's what ICE is doing.

America needs to stop helping the poor and instead starve them out, like we did the Indians.

This is a outrage based on ignorance.

If he wins he gets the $178k bonus on top of his income he makes while working in CA.
That means he pays $249k on ALL his income earned in CA.

If he lost he'd get $103k bonus, and still has his income he made while working in CA.
He'd pay $235 in taxes.

Comparing the total tax bill for all income just to the bonus is what's called a "meaningless sum." It's nonsense.

#17 | Posted by YAV at 2026-02-10 06:56 PM | Reply

For those that don't want to do math, he made $75k for winning as opposed to losing, and he's paying $14k in taxes on that bonus.
He's netting an additional $61,000.

His taxes outside of the above, based on days worked in CA remain the same.

Obvious correction for #17:
He'd pay $235 in taxes.
should be:
He'd pay $235k in taxes.

Yes, the contract he negotiated and entered into for the purpose of traveling the nation to compete and earn an ungodly amount of money (>$100 million over three years). He earned about $2 million working in California for the Super Bowl. When negotiating this salary, he would have taken into account that he would pay taxes based on where he works.

But, yeah, a $212k tax bill for working one week in the state of California seems totally normal. /s
#13 | Posted by BellRinger

He could skip if he decided that tax bill wasn't worth the benefit of competing in the premier event of his line of work. It's a free country.

Personally, I think the $2 million he made for that time in California is worth the $200k in taxes, not to mention the endorsement money he stands to make for winning he Super Bowl. But you do you, lamenting how a hundred-millionaire should somehow be free of the burden of paying taxes that every other person would have to pay.

It's actually either called "gaslighting" or "lying", if he knows the actual numbers; ignorance if he doesn't.

And if he doesn't know the actual numbers, he should STFU before he embarrasses himself further.

And apologize for the BS thread concept. Darnold most certainly did NOT pay a greater than 100% tax due to winning the Super Bowl.

Wrong again. Many pro athletes, especially the higher earning ones such as Darnold, are their own little cottage industries often times employing a dozen or more people dedicated to keeping them at their best. Their staff focus on their individual needs and provide consistency as they move from team to team. It's been reported that Darnold hired the strength and conditioning specialists at Motus PT to work with him specifically during the NFL playoffs.
Ryan Lopez is famous for being Kevin Durant's personal chef. Durant has played for 5 different teams while Lopez has worked for him.

Not a lie, but an equivocation.

He doesn't get a salary. Thought Danforth would correct this.

So it would have cost Darnold more to play in the Superbowl, so he lost even more money?
He can't deduct these from the California tax. Only professional help to pay the tax (TurboTax).

His estimated $249,000 tax bill exceeds his $178,000 game bonus, resulting in a net loss of over $70,000 on the game itself. The tax is over his 8 day stay in California. But he did receive a $2.5M bonus for Superbowl appearance.

In CA we never stop taxing you, even after you leave the State we want proof.

"His estimated $249,000 tax bill exceeds his $178,000 game bonus"

Nonsense. You're not including other pay he received for playing in CA, including, duh, playing the Rams and the 49ers earlier in the season, and playing the Rams at SOFI in January 2025 as the last game in the prior season..

"So it would have cost Darnold more to play in the Superbowl, so he lost even more money?"

No; some idiots are leaving out other income, and pretending CA has a super-secret tax rate OVER 100%.

"So it would have cost Darnold more to play in the Superbowl, so he lost even more money?"

No. After taxes, there was still money left over...AFTER TAXES.

" The tax is over his 8 day stay in California. But he did receive a $2.5M bonus for Superbowl appearance."

The 8-day stay is meaningless, unless he had other income that week (commercial shoots, etc). The bonus is pro-rated over the season, so the $2.5 is not ALL subject to CA taxes.

What websites are "educating" you with this horse manure???

"For those that don't want to do math, he made $75k for winning as opposed to losing, and he's paying $14k in taxes on that bonus."

The bonus ain't much. He's on a 35 million a year contract. $105M over three years, before incentives.

From California's point of view:
He made a lot more playing in the Super Bowl, than he did getting the bonus for winning the Super Bowl.

He makes 30 million a year, he works X days a year, he spend Y of those days working in California, he owes California Y/X income tax.

I don't know how many days a quarterback works in a year but let's say it's 250 like a top tier job. Eight, I believe, were in CA. With the bonus that's $1.3M. The tax bill is $202K.

I suppose it's a little steep to pay 15.5% state tax. On paper the highest rate for California residents is 13.3%. I hope he can cry himself to sleep as well as the children in ICE detention do.
