Three Republicans on Wednesday joined Democrats in the Arizona House to vote to repeal the state's controversial 1864 ban on nearly all abortions, which was revived by a court ruling earlier this month and which only includes exceptions to save the life of the pregnant woman.

... The 32-28 vote came after passionate speeches from Republicans, describing in graphic detail the abortion process as they argued for a "no" vote.

But with Republicans Matt Gress of Phoenix and Tim Dunn of Yuma joining with all 29 Democrats, House Bill 2677 passed. ...

Kind of a reflection of the US House of Reps; you need Dems to help Repubs defeat their crazies.

Next up: repeal infanticide bans.

Murder laws already exist.

Go troll elsewhere.

It's not murder if you don't count them as people.

Democrats could let Republicans wallow in this mess of their own creation and use it to make massive gains in November. The fact that they aren't willing to do that illustrates a major difference between the two parties today. Dems are willing to squander major electoral issues for the sake of actually helping people. If Republicans had an issue like this in their pocket there is zero chance they would lift a finger to help Democrats fix it.

And how would they not squander it? By letting the ban stay in effect in Arizona?

How does that help the democratic party?

#8 There is likely an abortion measure on the ballot in AZ in November. If this issue remains unresolved, the turnout for the ballot measure would overwhelmingly favor Democrats up and down the ballot.

I see. This action by the legislature likely puts a new abortion law on the ballot for November, correct?

#10 Not sure i understand your question, but my read on the current bill is that it repeals the outright 1864 ban which would then revert the state to a 15-week ban. There may still be a broader effort to expand abortion rights on the ballot in November, but its turnout-generating potential would be at least somewhat blunted by rescuing Republicans from the outright ban they sought and achieved.

Residents of Arizona are trying to enshrine abortion rights in the State Constitution this November. So not a new law but an actual State Constitutional Amendment. And Joe is right, there is some portion of the AZ population that would have voted for the Amendment with a total ban in place but won't do so with a 15 week an in place...which is likely why these three R's crossed the aisle.
