When I was a kid, I always wanted to be a chiropractor.

Then one day I found out it's not a dinosaur.

My recent take on chiropractors:

We moved from one corner of Virginia last year up near another corner. I'd go to my wife's chiropractor once every five years or so if I was really out of whack. $25 per visit, as my insurance did not allow for chiropractic (uhh, thanks, Obama). Very down-home office, as suits the territory. Doctor was athletic and middle-aged hip, but it was a "Hi, Hon" medical office.

Move up here: High-tech office, more modalities, decompression rooms, paying more rent. My wife's on Medicare, but I asked about rates for no insurance:

$75 per visit. I gulped.

"But you can put down $1440 for the next 24 visits and we'll give you a discount." Uh, no thanks.

My wife was put on an original schedule of twice per week, and they scheduled 26 weeks in advance. My wife finally decided she was tired of going down there twice a week. On the next visit, we said, "Please switch to every two weeks." Counter girl is not impressed. She's taking all those paid appointments off the schedule.

She doesn't try to convince us of the benefits of continued treatment. The doctor doesn't come out for a second and say that's against original orders.

I'm sure they are doing some kind of good work. They also cheerfully treat their patients as ATMs, except when the plug is pulled.

I've only ever heard of people going to chiropractors for like life. They never FIX anything.

My late wife was injured when forced into a manipulation by her Chiropractor /employer as part of her "job training" as a MOA.I am firmly of the opinion that their professional association has zero interest in protecting the public from injury and only exists so they can intimidate and silence their members victims.

Like anything there are good and bad. I've had to see a chiro for differing injuries throughout life, always had them "fixed". I also go about every three months for "maintenance" as I have some trouble spots that always seems to pop out when doing strict press/snatch/cleans.

So I'll disagree that chiros are no good.

Where I have a good one, I did take both of my sons right after birth to have him check their necks out since they both had had to be yanked on to come out.

I have insurance that is more work to bill than just charge me $29 a visit... which when you can't look up or to the right at all, and walk out the door feeling perfect is as freaking bargain.
