NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg ramped up the pressure on Canada to uphold its commitment to spend 2% of GDP on defense, noting that it's one of a minority of members that will fail to meet that level this year.

... Canada agreed in 2006, along with all North Atlantic Treaty Organization allies, to hit the spending target, and reaffirmed that pledge as recently as 2023 after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. It currently spends 1.33% of gross domestic product on defense, and a policy update earlier this year promised to reach 1.76% by 2030.

In 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine, just three member countries met the 2% target, Stoltenberg said in a speech in Ottawa on Wednesday. This year, 23 of 32 NATO allies will do so, he said.

Stoltenberg acknowledged that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government has agreed to add billions in new spending in coming years, including by modernizing the aerospace warning system known as Norad and investing in fifth-generation F-35 aircraft.

"At the same time, I continue to expect that all allies should meet the guideline of spending 2%," Stoltenberg said in the speech to the NATO Association of Canada. ...

Not to worry. Canada spends three times as much on defense as Pakistan, and we all know Pakistan has the baddest military force on the planet.

There is nothing wrong with asking Canada to meet its nato obligations.

I agree. I'd go as far as saying there is nothing wrong with asking any NATO member to meet its obligations.

Indeed, Pres Putin's unprovoked invasion of a sovereign Ukraine has done a lot to that end.

The United States and Canada share what is probably the longest non-militarized border on the planet. I hope that continues.

Also, we need the NORAD installations in Canada to track Santa on Christmas Eve each year....

If we have to increase spending we might as well spend it on our own industries rather than someone else's.

On the other hand, might I proffer that any increased spending be more towards the goals of the treaty that specifies such spending?

When a Country enters and agrees to a Treaty, there is more than just self-interest involved.

Ships don't do that? Most of the current hot spots are on the other side of the Atlantic.

Let's be fair to ourselves. We spend far more to defend the free world than any other nation but requiring 2% of GDP is the least we should expect from fellow NATO nations especially rich ones like Canada. They can afford it . at a time when several nations want to harm the democracies on the planet. Our success and our freedom constitutes the biggest threats to their psychotic dictators and they would love to cripple our economies just to show their people they can.

I suppose we could build some atomic bombs. Those are useless but really expensive so it would get us to 2%.

The smart thing to do would be to task the air force with wildfire fighting and buy 5000 water bombers.
