Lt. Colonel ML Cavanaugh: When I was an officer in the U.S. military, I abstained from voting in national elections, one small way to keep the armed forces nonpartisan. Now, to uphold that same value and prevent the military from becoming a political tool, I believe that in November, everyone - civilians, service members, veterans, everyone - should vote for whoever has the best chance to keep Donald Trump out of office.

I am neither a Democrat nor a Republican, but an American who has fought in the forces that guard our country and our way of life, in the words of our military's Code of Conduct. I fought in Iraq, earned two Bronze Stars and taught military strategy at West Point. My commitment to military values and nonpartisanship hasn't changed since I rejoined civilian life. What's changed is the choice presented in American politics. There really isn't one, because one of the two major-party presidential candidates is clearly, demonstrably, irredeemably unfit to serve as commander in chief.

Only one candidate has suggested the execution of a former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Only one candidate has called our war dead - specifically, the Marines who fell at Belleau Wood in France during World War I - "suckers" and "losers."

Only one candidate has suggested putting NASCAR drivers and college coaches in critical national security positions now held by lifelong military professionals who serve as generals and admirals.

But what settles the question altogether is the certainty that former President Trump would end the military's bedrock contract with the American people: nonpartisanship. He tried last time and came dangerously close.

"It is easy to destroy an organization," wrote retired Adm. William McRaven, former commander of U.S. Special Operations Command, "if you have no appreciation for what makes that organization great." McRaven penned those words five years ago, during the former president's first term in office, and ended by suggesting that if nothing were to change, someone else must serve as commander in chief.

Nothing about Trump has changed. There is only one choice on Nov. 5.

ML Cavanaugh recently retired after 25 years in the U.S. Army. He co-founded the Modern War Institute at West Point.

He ain't wrong ...

I'd love to see Gens Milley (former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs) and Kelly (former Trump Chief of Staff) speak at the Democratic convention.

Milley was horrified at some of the things Trump wanted to do (nuke Mexico, etc etc). The story about Trump telling him to no longer have wounded veterans at his events should p*** off anyone who's served or respects our military.

Kelly, former Trump Chief of Staff had a lot to say. On the previous note, what Trump said to him in France, calling those who died "losers and suckers" and asking "what's in it for them?" among other outrageous acts and statements.

Also, that Trump is "the most flawed person I've ever met."

Former Defense Secretary Mattis would be another one to invite.

They all have such tales to tell about Trump's anti-democratic attitude and his outrageous behavior.

It would be impactful to see what you posit above, but I'm doubtful that it will ever happen due to the fact these men are more likely Republicans and still don't want to blur the lines between their loyal duty as officers by criticizing Trump's unfitness for command - which can be seen as subordinate by those unfamiliar with each's previous interactions with Trump while he was in the Oval Office.

However, since this Lt. Col. decided to go public in this op-ed, perhaps he would be okay repeating this message at the upcoming DNC, while keeping his career-long non-partisan street cred intact.

I'm life long Republican and I never thought I'd ever vote for a Democrat...

I've never voted in a national election and I'm non-political but because of Donald Trump I must now speak out...

Then you find out they've never voted for a Republican and they're from political families and very tied into the Democrat party. Like this guy. Check out his wife's facebook page.

If you come from a family of Democrat politicos dissing Trump is one way to start your political career, or help your wife hers.

Former Chief of Staff retired Gen. John Kelly:

"He's the most flawed person I've ever met," "He doesn't know anything, doesn't want to know anything, and won't read anything unless it has his name every other sentence," and recounted Trump calling dead U.S. soldiers "losers and suckers" during a D-Day commemoration ceremony. "What was in it for them?!"

Trump telling Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Gen. Milley, to never again bring wounded vets in his presence. Or when he asked about nuking Mexico, etc etc.

@#14

What is it about people who were selected by, and used to work for, fmr Pres Trump?

From volunteering to testify against fmr Pres Trump in front of the Jan6 Committee to people chosen by fmr Pres Trump saying they do not support him.

Maybe that's why Project 2025 is so focused upon loading up government with toadies of fmr Pres trump, those who put adultation of him over allegiance to the Constitution.

LOL Biden is a joke and Harris would not be any better. Under her watch inflation would be worse.

Does your "back from the dead" alias have anything to substantiate those claims?

#16 New Orleans, has nothing other than a MAGA talking point. Inflation resulted from two things. First, Trump jawboned Powell into 3 rate cuts in 2020. Rates were already virtually at rock bottom, and the economic slowdown had nothing to do with tight money and bringing rates down even further to ZERO set the stage. The other reason for the inflation, of course, was coming out of Covid. Huge pent up demand. The FED is always late to the game and behind the curve, and did not address this soon enough.

Interestingly enough govt debt also plays a role, but MAGA people don't recognize or won't admit that Trump added 8 trillion to the US debt whereas the current admin added 4.

Inflation occurred around the globe.

America has experienced the lowest rate of inflation among all western nations.

It's a shame liberals have no objectivity in their heads whatsoever so when they see someone make a point, they immediately accept it or hate it depending on if it meets their narrative. Here, I'll take a stab at some of the statements this guy tried to use as ammunition:

"Only one candidate has suggested the execution of a former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff."
And multiple liberals have, in a matter of a few years, eluded to Trump should be dead..and I'm talking well-known liberals, not just some guy off the street. And to make the point even better, you can search on DR for all the times DR lib kids have made statements about wishing Trump were dead and things like that. So, if death threats are something you don't like, stop allowing your own party to do it and get away with it.

"Only one candidate has called our war dead " specifically, the Marines who fell at Belleau Wood in France during World War I " "suckers" and "losers.""
Biden himself said the military is full of stupid bastards. I'm sure liberals will say "yeah, but you are missing context, he meant it as a joke". Which would be fine, if liberals actually cared about any context from the other side. Liberals have already proven multiple times this year that many things they do need context but when attacking the other party, they refuse to accept any context. Go ahead, try to argue that. You won't win.

"Only one candidate has suggested putting NASCAR drivers and college coaches in critical national security positions now held by lifelong military professionals who serve as generals and admirals."
Only one POTUS (in modern times and the only one I remember) has said he is going to make appointments based on race and not credentials (completely against the law). After less than a minute search, I found this...
www.brookings.edu Brookings is more center than many outlets so it's not a stretch to say their data is somewhat balanced. And it provides a great response to someone who wants to demonize one POTUS for their appointments.

So, in summary, if the statements can be refuted easily, using them to support your hypocritical narrative only makes you look bad.
