Illinois now ranks as the least affordable state for housing in the Midwest, with 1 in 3 households paying more than 30% of their income for housing as property taxes continue to rise. U.S. Census Bureau data analyzed by the Illinois Policy Institute also shows that at least 15% of households pay upwards of 50% of their income for housing, rendering them by federal standards as "severely burdened." At the same time, data shows that the typical homeowner's property taxes have jumped by $756 since 2019, leaving the state home to the second-highest rates in the country. Rep. Dan Caulkins, R-Decatur, is sounding the alarm as property taxes are on the rise.

"It's having a devastating effect and it's only getting worse," Caulkins told The Center Square. "We've seen our population decline and it's also a deterrent for new businesses to come to Illinois. In order to keep or attract businesses, we're having to give them all kinds of incentives. It's if you're taking money out of the left pocket and putting it in the right pocket and claiming that you're creating jobs."

Sure, Florida property tax rate is only 0.91%. We have no state income tax. Our economy is expected to grow by 3% in 2024, well above the national expected growth rate of 1.4%. I have great condo/auto insurance. Life is good.

Maybe ask the fine folks living in Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska or California.

Well thanks for asking, things are ----. Electricity is way up, it's getting harder to get home insurance, auto insurance. Taxes are crazy, crazy. Theft and crime have shut the local CVS.

Property taxes have stayed the same though.

Why are property taxes going up in Illinois? The article is sparse on the reason, is it because housing prices are rising so fast there? .

My property taxes went up 40% this year but the rate is the same that's just how much the appraised value went up since the last assessment 4 years ago. Bunch of people told me well you can fight it except by the time the assessment was done the value was up another 5% according to multiple real estate sites. Insurance went up 40% as well and now my escrow payment is almost equal to my mortgage payment.

Thank goodness I bought well under what I could afford so I'm not being priced out, yet, but it does make me worried for some of my neighbors many of whom are retired.

Ours went up 30%.

We really have to feel sorry for all the retirees in Florida condos. New requirements to upgrade structures after the Surfside condo collapse left many with $60-$150,000 bills from their condo associations few can afford. Many retirees are having to go back to work just to pay that surprise bill, if they can. If they don't, the condo associations will foreclose on them.
