YouTube access within Russia is now being shut down by Vladimir Putin's censors, despite -- or because of -- its role as a cultural phenomenon.

"The YouTube offensive started before August's Kursk incursion and is a strategic rather than a tactical move to curtail information flow. Besides, other social platforms like Telegram and TikTok are filled with news about the Kursk region " the censors don't yet block traffic on those platforms.

The Kremlin knew there was little point in seeking to harass Google, YouTube's owners, into cooperation. Notably though, the censors also blocked Signal " the most secure, and trusted messenger system, which is widely used by the Russian opposition.

Russian censors are taking a risk. YouTube is now a significant cultural phenomenon.

The attack was met with a backlash from internet users: subscribers of more than 135 regional telecom operators began canceling their home internet access contracts due to problems with YouTube and other Google services (the censors initially suppressed YouTube's traffic through landlines, while mobile networks were left to provide unrestricted access to the service, for a while longer.)

For those clients, YouTube has become the main reason to be online.

The reaction of the near-100 million Russians who used to live with YouTube remains to be seen."

"YouTube is finally BANNED in Russia"

Natasha's Adventures

Aug 22, 2024

"The Russian government has long targeted YouTube as it became the main platform for Russian political opposition.

Besides, YouTube was the main and only platform for entertainment content like travel, cooking and lifestyle videos.

But those days are over -- we are abandoning this Western woke soy anti-Russian project called YouTube -- and are moving to... RuTube?"

Is Putin's Popular Support Real
istories.media

... This text is translated by DeepL, an AI based translator. ...

Should we believe the polls that show that more than 80% of Russians support Putin? Maybe people are just afraid to tell the sociologists the truth?

The debate about Putin's real popularity has always been going on, but has intensified since the war started. Putin's rating jumped " did people really support him?

Sociologists conducting polls have to constantly justify themselves. Denis Volkov, director of the Levada Center, listed and then refuted the main arguments of critics as to why Russian polls cannot be trusted: after the war began, people " especially Putin's opponents " began to refuse to participate in polls and to answer questions about the war much more often, and if they did answer, they usually did not answer what they "really" thought.

According to Volkov, in reality, the "unreachability" of respondents has changed little since the war (in 2022 it was slightly higher than in 2019-2020, but lower than in 2021), and the number of interviews interrupted on questions about Ukraine is quite low (from two to seven), as in polls on other topics, which, with a sample of more than a thousand people, is insignificant. As for the honesty of answers, the increase in support for Putin after the start of the war is combined with changes in answers to other questions " about economic behavior and sentiment, Volkov assures.

Alexei Levinson, head of the socio-cultural research department at the Levada Center, responded to another reproach -- that sociologists simply cannot show results with lower ratings: "As long as the authorities are satisfied with the high ratings they receive honestly, they will tolerate us. When it stops being so, I don't think we'll last long."

While the debate is going on, public opinion polls continue to record that Putin enjoys the broadest support of the population. For example, according to the Levada Center, this year Putin's activities were "generally approved" by 85"87% (the poll is conducted every month). ...

A glimpse into the future of the United States under a possible President Trump starting in 2025?

That appears to be the Project 2025 Plan.

They still imagine Trump as King of the Oligarchs... and Trump has given them what Reagan couldn't to the Rwing Oligarchy; wipe out the Middle Class, which was their stated goal.

Trump Media was supposed be their outlet, though, so there's a bit of a hold up.

@#10 ... Russia's Media Is Now Totally in Putin's Hands ...

I don't know yet if I agree with that 2022 article.

I will say, I agree, it definitely documents the trend that Pres Putin seems to be on.

It also highlights the rants the fmr Pres Trump seems to have with the press here in the United States.

One thing I notice...

Why don't all those 2nd Amendment folk have a similar concern when fmr Pres Trump stomps on the 1st Amendment?

(corollary question - why were the items in the 1st Amendment first, and before those items in the 2nd amendment? Maybe the Founders thought they might be more important? I cannot afford to buy a luxury cruise for Justice Thomas, so I guess I am screwed in that question....)

Good thing for Putin that Russia is a pretend democracy, where the people's votes don't really matter, because even with his tamed media the word is out that the war against Ukraine is going badly, and Putin is just a mass murderer. Ukraine did nothing to Russia to excuse the invasion and occupation.
