Former President Donald Trump made a Fox News audience howl by joking about Amber Thurman. Thurman was a 28-year-old Georgia woman who, in 2022, took abortion pills she obtained in North Carolina. She experienced a rare complication when not all of the pregnancy tissue was expelled from her uterus. When she arrived at a Georgia emergency room, she was bleeding and in pain. In such situations, doctors typically perform what's called dilation and curettage, in which the remaining tissue is removed. However, under Georgia law, the procedure could not be done legally. Hesitant to act, doctors waited 20 hours to perform the procedure, but it was too late. Thurman developed sepsis and died.
