Rates of alcohol use disorder decreased, while rates of opioid use disorder and stimulant use disorder held largely steady at 1.7% and 3.1% of the population, respectively, according to the report. But heavy marijuana use is on the rise. Nearly 21 million Americans over 12 years old, or 7.1% of the population, meet criteria for marijuana use disorder, according to the study, up from 6% a year before. The term substance use disorder is not fully synonymous with addiction, but is characterized by the National Institute on Drug Abuse as "patterns of behaviors that might include using more of the substance than planned, finding it difficult to stop, or continuing to use despite knowing it's causing harm."

Still, the report largely highlighted positive trends, and comes amid a significant downtick in drug-related mortality. Roughly 78,000 Americans likely died of a drug overdose in the most recent 12-month period, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, compared to a 12-month death rate that peaked above 110,000 in late 2023.

Mental health trends were largely unchanged. Fewer young people ages 12-17 experienced major depressive episodes or suicide attempts, while rates of depressive episodes and serious mental illness in adults stayed flat.

Surprised the opioid numbers didn't drop.

Laying here recovering from breaking my ankle and having it surgically reconstructed. I'm taking about 1/2 the amount of painkillers they prescribed thanks to MJ doing some heavy lifting in the pain relief category.

Even on the regular I get 5 norco a day for MS but frequently top out at 4 and on weekends vacations get that number down to 3.
