He thinks the voters he's trying to reach are stupid.

This may not be the wisest political strategy, H. L. Mencken notwithstanding. Vance's approval ratings have been underwater for more than a year, and the Never Trump pollster Sarah Longwell recently conducted a focus group with Trump voters and found that Vance has left them cold. Either way, Vance's performance plays as tragicomedy: comic because he's so bad at it, but tragic because of who Vance was not that long ago. Much has been made of his critique of Trump in his 2016 Atlantic essay, and although his flip-flop on the president is astonishing, he has also reversed himself on a more fundamental view of politics.

In that essay, he criticized the demagogic tendency to condescend to people in so-called flyover country, where he grew up"to view them as yokels who could be easily manipulated with simplistic talking points and grievance plays. The harms that Trump identified, Vance wrote, "demand serious thought and measured action"from governments, yes, but also from community leaders and individuals." Trump, he argued, was cynically co-opting those harms for his own gain and doing Americans a disservice. That Vance was right; this Vance doesn't seem to care.

The Mencken links to a Robert Kahn 2017 piece in which there's this:

Nor did Henry Louis Mencken say, precisely: "No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public."

What Mencken (1880-1956) did write, in the Sept. 19, 1926 edition of the Chicago Daily Tribune, was: "No one in this world, so far as I know " and I have searched the records for years, and employed agents to help me " has ever lost money by underestimating the intelligence of the great masses of the plain people. Nor has anyone ever lost public office thereby."

Vance slithered onto the political dustheap when he proudly announced he lies to get attention.
He and scum like him are playing with other folks' lives.
They are sociopaths who will literally kill for a headline.

"If I have to create stories so that the American media actually pays attention to the suffering of the American people, then that's what I'm going to do."
