He sseriously undermined the President's credibility and should resign. I honestly have to wonder about the competence of any cabinet mrmber who wouldn't have immediately infoemed the President of his/her hospitalization and especially the Sec. of Defense. Unacceptable! Biden should loudly and angrily fire him.

#1 Exactly. Who gets to take leave and not tell their boss? I get that Biden isn't going to approve everyone's time off but get real in his position, it should be in his mind mandatory that his boss knows. Even if he does not want to disclose why he needs the time off.

Meh.

There are procedures for an incapacitated or unavailable person in the chain of command. If everything would fall apart because you couldn't find one person it would be a national security nightmare.

And if this did create a problem? GOOD. Because it's better to make sure those procedures work when there isn't an immediate crisis. They ought to be running "somebody disappeared" tests at least a few times a year.

@#2 ... Who gets to take leave and not tell their boss? ...

I agree, mostly. But (you knew there would be a "but" :)   ) what was the reason for not telling the boss?

Was the reason to avoid the responsibilities? Or was the reason more of a procedural error?

The investigation showed that it seems that SoD Austin did arrange for a backup while he was out., and that he had no malicious reason for not informing Pres Biden.

A procedural error? That is what it is starting to look like.

And, from what I've heard, that gap in procedure has now been filled.

To be honest, I am glad that I was not on the receiving end of that ~filling the gap in procedure.~

I would hope so. One of his duties is to verify the order if POTUS decides to launch a nuclear attack.

Not something that will ever happen, but it's not a good gap to leave open.

He should have informed the President, but the details of his medical condition are none of anyone's business.
