FTA: "Black recruits represented nearly 60% of those who died, a striking disparity given that federal data show Black officers make up 12% of local police forces." Instructors in law-enforcement academies and the military can legally make life difficult for undesirable candidates during training. People may see hazing in the movies, but this practice is real and used against some recruits.

This is very sad news. I'll wager part of the problem comes from no one explaining the physical requirements of the job, and no one tells recruits they must get into excellent physical condition in advance of their first day in training. Many know that going in, and others learn it once they survive training. Let the driving around town and eating donuts come later...
