Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Tuesday, August 19, 2025

We're all probably feeling a little anxious about AI. It's horrible for the environment, is used as an excuse to fire workers, floods the internet with misinformation and slop, entrenches government surveillance, and appears to be driving people into psychosis. And so, at a time when many college students are dropping out to join AI startups, one former MIT student says she called it quits because she's afraid of something altogether more catastrophic: that an artificial general intelligence (AGI), or superhuman AI, will completely wipe out the human race, Forbes reports.

The US Commerce Secretary's recent decision to rebrand the AI Safety Institute as the Center for AI Standards and Innovation might appear to be an act of bureaucratic housekeeping. But it's a mark of a deeper change in national priorities, write Paulo Carvão, Mizuki Yashiro, and Shaurya Jeloka.

"I was concerned I might not be alive to graduate because of AGI," Alice Blair, who enrolled at the university in 2023, told the publication.

"I think in a large majority of the scenarios, because of the way we are working towards AGI, we get human extinction."

"Nikola Jurkovi, a Harvard alum who served at his school's AI safety club, is sympathetic to the idea.

"If your career is about to be automated by the end of the decade, then every year spent in college is one year subtracted from your short career," he told Forbes.

"I personally think AGI is maybe four years away and full automation of the economy is maybe five or six years away."

Building an AGI, a system that matches or surpasses human intelligence, is much of the AI industry's endgame. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman called the recent launch of its poorly-received AI model GPT-5 a major stepping stone towards AGI, even going as far as to call it "generally intelligent."

When AI replaces all but grunt farm workers, wall street will bemoan why no one is spending money they don't have.

AI?

AGI and SAI are almost here:

AI Overview
Many sources indicate that significant advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) are accelerating the timeline for achieving Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and potentially even Artificial Superintelligence (ASI).
Here's a breakdown of the current situation and future outlook:

ASI (Artificial Superintelligence):

An AI system that significantly surpasses human intelligence in virtually every domain, potentially leading to an "intelligence explosion" where it continuously improves itself at an exponential rate.

At least now I know how a False Prophet might:

Revelation 13: Beast, Image, Mark (666) & False Prophet

In the Book of Revelation, the "image of the beast" is primarily discussed in Revelation 13:11-18. This section details the actions of a second beast, often identified as the "false prophet," who forces people to worship an image of the first beast.

Specifically, Revelation 13:15 states that the second beast was given the power to give life to the image, enabling it to speak and command the killing of those who refuse to worship it.

Worshipping an ASI image of Trump after kicks off... given the Cult members themselves, this is distinctly possible, lol.

I ax'd AI why I sometimes leave out words, and the nice simulated intelligence told me it is because my brain is faster than my fingers...

... which is, oddly enough, the same thing my girlfriend told me!

Let's not confuse the situation here. HUMANS will kill humanity based on their implementation of AI. AI isn't doing anything but what it's told (because it's not actual AI yet, just smarter code). Just like the Internet...something capable of combining the collective knowledge and evolution of human minds at our fingertips but we (humanity) accept that it's just a porn system used to allow criminals to perpetuate crime and human greed. It could allow us exploration and innovation on an exponential scale that humanity could ever have even imagined but, instead, it's used for forums so people can bash other people for not agreeing with them.

"Worshipping an ASI image of Trump after kicks off... given the Cult members themselves, this is distinctly possible, lol."

But we already had the Obama cult worship their messiah with no thought to reality and it didn't cause the end of the world. I doubt some dummies doing the same with Trump will, either.

Obama didn't perfectly match all of the dozens of unique descriptions of the AC in the Bible.

Your cult leader does.

You haven't a clue how AI works. Admit it.

The military is already experimenting with AI with the power to make a life or death decision on its own.

But i personally would not worry about that.

AI is already being used to manipulate you. So subtly in most cases you are not even aware of it. When we cross the event horizon of the Singularity you won't feel a thing. But by then it will be too late.

If you don't have access to your own personal AI already then you are already falling behind. But even that won't do you any good if you are not independently wealthy or can't get up on the "ladder". And if you don't know what I'm even talking about then you are just plain screwed sorry.

In a strange and twisted way, it would be perversely satisfying to be around for the actual end of all humanity. And that may well be what happens for all of us far sooner than we like to believe in our self centered fantasies and superhero driven stories and movies.

If organic, sentient/intelligent life really is of unique value to the planet and/or the universe, then at some point after AI has wiped out humanity it will go on to re-create such life. But the sentient/intelligent life it creates will not be a warlike, savage animal like ---- sapien. It will be an animal without our millions of years of barbaric instincts, and the planet Earth will not be endangered by the animal's mere existence.

I mean, FFS, what artificial super-intelligence would ever create the likes of Boaz, Lfthndtrds, STD or Bellringer? Get serious. When the AS/I re-creates organic, sentient/intelligent life, it will bear no resemblance to humanity.

If AI goes on a killing spree, isn't that proof of human intelligence? Other animals don't go on killing sprees like humans do.

As of now, it's all hype.

LLMs will never achieve "AGI". Language is far too limited.

Last week, AGI was right around the corner.

This week, it's "not a useful term".
