Sonic Youth - The Diamond Sea (radio edit, 1995)
www.youtube.com

Lyrics excerpt ...

genius.com

... Verse 1]
Time takes its crazy toll
And how does your mirror grow?
You better watch yourself when you jump into it
'Cause the mirror's gonna steal your soul

[Chorus 1]
I wonder how it came to be my friend
That someone just like you has come again
You'll never, never know how close you came
Until you fall in love with the diamond rain

[Verse 2]
Throw all his trash away
Look out, he's here to stay
Your mirror's gonna crack when he breaks into it
And you'll never, never be the same

[Chorus 2]
Look into his eyes and you can see
Why all the little kids are dressed in dreams
I wonder how he's gonna make it back
When he sees that you just know it's make believe

Steppenwolf - Monster (1969)
www.youtube.com

Lyrics excerpt ...

genius.com

... [Verse 1]
Once the religious, the hunted and weary
Chasing the promise of freedom and hope
Came to this country to build a new vision
Far from the reaches of kingdom and pope

[Pre-Chorus 1]
Like good Christians some would burn the witches
Later some got slaves to gather riches

[Chorus]
But still from near and far to seek America
They came by thousands, to court the wild
But she just patiently smiled, and bore them a child
To be their spirit, and guiding light

[Verse 2]
And once the ties with the crown had been broken
Westward in saddle and wagon they went
And till the railroad linked ocean to ocean
Many the lives which had come to an end

[Pre-Chorus 2]
While we bullied, stole and bought our a homeland
We began the slaughter of the red man

[Chorus]
But still from near and far to seek America
They came by thousands, to court the wild
But she just patiently smiled, and bore them a child
To be their spirit, and guiding light

[Bridge]
The blue and gray they stomped it
They kicked it just like a dog
And when the war was over
They stuffed it just like a hog

[Verse 3]
And though the past has its share of injustice
Kind was the spirit in many a way
But its protectors and friends have been sleeping
Now it's a monster and will not obey

A few years ago, was in Munich, doing the touristy thing.

After a long day of sightseeing (18,220 steps!), was just leaving the Staatliches Museum gyptischer Kunst, walking out into the green out front.

Imagine the surprise!

Someone was setting up the green for a party later on, and several crowd-level speakers were singing this song.

And yes... did sing a song ....

Earth, Wind & Fire - Let's Groove

A pun tune ...

Kip Addotta - Wet Dream (1984)
www.youtube.com

Lyrics excerpt ...

...
It was April the forty-first
Being a quadruple leap year
I was driving in downtown Atlantis
My Barracuda was in the shop
So I was in a rented Stingray
And it was overheating

So I pulled into a Shell Station
They said I'd blown a seal
I said, "Fix the damned thing
And leave my private life out of it
Okay pal?"

While they were doing that
I walked over to a place called the Oyster Bar, a real dive
But I knew the owner
He used to play for the Dolphins
I said "Hi Gil"
You have to yell, he's hard of herring

Think I had a wet dream
Cruisin' thru the Gulf Stream
Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh
Wet dream

Gil was also down on his luck
Fact is he was barely keeping his head below water
I bellied up to the sandbar
He poured me the usual
Shaken not stirred
With a peanut butter and jellyfish sandwich on the side
Heavy on the mako

I slipped him a fin
On porpoise
I was feeling good
I even dropped a sand dollar in the box for Jerry's squids
For the halibut
...

Yeah, a pun tune ...

Planet P - Why Me? (Extended Version, 1983)
www.youtube.com

Lyrics excerpt ...

genius.com

...
Sitting up here watching all the lights blink down below
The earth is turning, why does it go so slow?
Thinking about the girl I left behind
Houston can you hear me, or have I lost my mind?
Why me? Why me?

I was waiting on the pad, all systems were go
The man up in the tower was enjoying the show
Then I got this feeling that I never had before
Hey let me out of here, what am I here for?
Why me?

There must be a thousand other guys
Must be some other way to look good in your eyes
Why am I up here? What do they see in me?
Must be one thousand other places to be
Why me? Why Me?

The last man to be here was never heard from again
He won't be back this way till 2010
Now I'm riding on a fountain of fire
With my back to the earth, I go higher and higher
Why me? Why me?

OK, here's a tune with a story behind it ...

Love & Rockets - Haunted When the Minutes Drag (1986)
www.youtube.com

Lyrics excerpt ...

genius.com

...
The word that would
Best describe this feeling would be, 'haunted'
I touch the clothes you left behind
That still retain your shape and lines, still haunted

I trace the outline of your eyes
Blue in the mirror, hypnotized and haunted
I find a solitary hair gone
And still I reminisce, I'm haunted

Haunted by your soul
Haunted by your hair
Haunted by your clothes
Haunted by your eyes

By your soul, by your hair
By your clothes, by your eyes
By your voice, by your smile
By your mouth, by your soul

By your hair, by your clothes
By your eyes, by your voice
By your smile, by your mouth
By your soul, haunted (haunted)

So this is for when you feel happy
And this is for when you feel sad
And this is for when you feel...
Nothing

Ohh, when the minutes drag
Ohh, when the minutes drag
...

@#30

OK, the story behind that is ...

Back in the day, about four decades ago, I went to the area YMCA to ~work out~ and keep fit.

The exercise room at that Y was just off from the pool. So between sets, I used to walk out and talk with the lifeguard on duty.

One time, when talking to the lifeguard, I asked her whether she became bored with what she was doing.

She showed me a scribble on her daily log. The scribble was, "Haunted When The Minutes Drag.

One thing I will note, and I do want to emphasize here, is that all the conversations I have had with those various lifeguards at the YMCA, never once did they look at me.

Their gaze was always focused upon the pool and the people in it.

I always have respected them for that.
