A new Trump-backed proposal to end the war in Ukraine would grant Russia expanded control over eastern territories in exchange for U.S. security guarantees for Ukraine and Europe.

The plan, outlined in 28 points, has sparked sharp debate among officials in Kyiv, Washington, and Moscow, with mediation efforts involving Qatar and Turkey adding further intrigue.

Russia would gain full control of Luhansk and Donetsk, though Ukraine still holds about 14.5% of the Donbas.

Demilitarized zones in parts of Donbas would bar Russian troop deployments.

Crimea and Donbas would be recognized internationally as Russian territory, though Ukraine would not be formally asked to accept this.

Ukrainian officials say the plan limits Kyiv's military size and long-range weapons in exchange for U.S. security guarantees.

Qatar and Turkey are actively involved in mediation, with senior officials participating in talks.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Moscow remains open to negotiations, blaming Kyiv for the pause in talks.

Planned trilateral talks in Ankara were postponed as Zelensky sought broader European involvement and faced domestic political turmoil.

"Ukraine: US-Russian peace proposal is absurd' and unacceptable
Officials say proposal is aimed at stirring up division and disorientating Kyiv's allies

A new US-Russian peace proposal to end the war in Ukraine has been dismissed as "absurd" and unacceptable by officials in Kyiv amid talks between Volodymyr Zelenskyy and a high-ranking US army delegation.

They said the proposal reportedly drafted by Kirill Dmitriev, a close ally of Vladimir Putin, and Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff was a "provocation", the aim of which was to stir up division and "disorientate" Ukraine's allies, they added.

"There are currently no signs that the Kremlin is ready for serious negotiations. Putin is trying to stall for time and avoid US sanctions," said Oleksandr Merezhko, the chair of Ukraine's foreign policy parliamentary committee. He dismissed Dmitriev as a "nobody".

Ukraine's first deputy foreign minister, Sergiy Kyslytsya, called the initiative unrealistic. He suggested it was a classic Soviet-style information operation to influence opinion and sow panic."

Hi Corky

I was wondering how long Gen Keith Kellogg (US Army Ret.) was going to linger with the Trumpf junta before realizing he was just a "beard."

BTW: I do not know the author who wrote about the Economist magazine cover. I used his piece to demonstrate that their editors foresee an annus horribilis in 2026 to which I agree.
