Aldrich Ames spied for the Soviet Union and Russia from 1985 until his 1994 arrest. He had pleaded guilty to espionage and tax evasion, admitting he received $2.5m from Moscow for betraying the identities of at least ten Western intelligence assets, at least nine of whom were executed.

This Judas Iscariot compromised more than 100 US intelligence operations in one of the most damaging breaches in American history, sending numerous US assets in the USSR to their deaths and crippling CIA operations.

Despite repeated red flags including failed polygraph examinations, unexplained wealth, and alcohol problems, CIA promoted Ames to increasingly sensitive positions, representing a major institutional failure with long-term consequences for counterintelligence practices.

Nota Bene: From 1985 to 1990, Vladimir Putin served as a KGB foreign intelligence officer in Dresden, East Germany. Aldrich Ames' Soviet handlers were primarily in Moscow and other locations, not in Dresden.

The 1980s saw other spies betray the US, like Clayton Lonetree, the first US Marine ever court-martialed for espionage. He was eventually released because the damage to the USIC was not significant, his motivation was loneliness, and he would serve as an expert witness in the trial of a more significant catch named George Trofimoff.

The other notorious Benedict Arnold in the USIC from that era who caused grave damage to the US is Jonathan Pollard. He spied for Israel while working as a civilian intelligence analyst for the US Navy. Pollard disclosed the names of thousands of people who had cooperated with US intelligence agencies and he shopped his services successfully to other countries as well. This Judas Iscariot was paroled on 20 Nov 2015 and then he moved to Israel where he was greeted as a national hero by PM Benjamin Netanyahu: Benjamin Netanyahu Greets American Traitor

@#1 ... Despite repeated red flags including failed polygraph examinations, unexplained wealth, and alcohol problems, CIA promoted Ames to increasingly sensitive positions, representing a major institutional failure with long-term consequences for counterintelligence practices. ...

One can only hope that lessons were learned from those failures.

On the other hand, do we have a Russian blackmail victim now occupying the Oval Office?

I wish I knew.

So, like the proverbial broken clock, James Jesus Angleton (for his yuuge faults) had a point about that shadowy trade.

Hi Doc Sarvis:

In a way, yes. James Angleton thought the US had its own version of the infamous UK Cambridge Five.

BTW: I just finished The Day Lincoln was Shot by Jim Bishop (1955).

Immediately taking charge after President Lincoln was shot (and slowly dying), Secretary of War Edwin Stanton thought the assassination was a huge Confederate Secret Service operation because USSECSTATE Seward was also attacked (but he survived).

Previously exposed Confederate plots like spreading Yellow Fever to the Union Army or burning down NYC put that these thoughts in his head. So immediately after the assassination, Stanton had all the US police and military forces looking for non-existent spies, ghosts, and terrorists, using the telegraph system efficiently.

Meanwhile the plotters were John Wilkes Booth, a violent oaf, and two good-for-nothings.

Stanton realized his miscalculation later and never owned up to it.

Like our immediate post-9/11 world, paranoia and fear took over reason in Stanton's head from 14 - 15 April 1865.

Like James Angleton after being duped by Kim Philby during WW2.

Coriolanus, there's an interesting treatment of Angleton in the A Spy Among Froends miniseries that highlights Kim Philly and Nicholas Elliott with plenty of room for Angleton. On Lincoln, Jim Bishop's book provided my intro to Lincoln's assassination as a "yute." Don't bother with Theodore Roscoe's The Web of Conspiracy (1959), a huge, dense tome I attempted tackling in middle school. Basically, he thinks Stanton was the main guy. Edward Steers, Jr., Blood on the Moon is a solid Lincoln assassination source. And you're right, plenty of confusion and fubar associated with the entire affair.

Thanks for the tips, Doc Sarvis. As I don't watch TV, I'll have to find the book A Spy Among Friends.

And Jefferson Davis outlived most of the Lincoln cabinet by decades if I recollect correctly.

I gave away the Lincoln Conspiracy many years ago which also accused the Lincoln cabinet of involvement.

One of our drudge.com Fellow Travelers put me on to Dorothy Kilgallen ("What's My Line" panelist and journalist extraordinaire) who was investigating the JFK assassination by concentrating on Jack Ruby and interviewing him.

She was writing in her nationwide column that the Warren Commission report was a bunch of bunkum.

Ms. Kilgannen confided to a few trusted people that she was on to something "big."

In 1965, she mysteriously died in a "suicide" that didn't look right to her hairdresser when he came upon her body in a room that Dorothy would never have slept in.

All of her notes were seized by the FBI in NYC in 1965.
