The Spanish government has announced a plan to legalise the status of undocumented migrants, a measure expected to benefit at least 500,000 people.

Spain's government is one of the more innovative ones in the EU. Their citizens are far more accepting of migrants and have resisted the pull to the right. Perhaps not surprising, as Spain knows a thing or two about living under a fascist government, having only dispensed of their own in 1975.

"Regularization will be available to foreign nationals who do not have a criminal record and can prove they lived in Spain for at least five months prior to 31 December 2025.

"This is an historic day for our country," said Elma Saiz, Spain's Minister of Inclusion, Social Security, and Migration.
Spain has seen a large influx of migrants in recent years, mainly from Latin America.

The conservative think-tank Funcas found that the number of undocumented migrants in Spain had risen from 107,409 in 2017 to 837,938 in 2025-- -an eight-fold increase.

The highest number of undocumented arrivals currently living in Spain are believed to be from Colombia, Peru, and Honduras.
Spain has been outperforming the other main EU economies in recent years, posting expected growth of close to 3% in 2025.
Unemployment, a longstanding weakness of the Spanish economy, has dipped below 10% for the first time since 2008."

~snip~

Spain also has a generous public pension system which guarantees almost 80% of the salary of workers when they retire, a level that almost doubles that of the rest of the European Union. How fortunate for these migrants in generous Spain, unlike the poor souls being persecuted and deported in the US by the diabolical, xenophobic Trumpf junta.

Compare the compassion, charity, and common sense of the Spanish government with the cruelty and cold-blooded callousness of the US, Israeli, and Russian governments.

Night and day.

Spain's economy outperformed the United States last year.

Trump keeps threatening a trade war with Spain since they're still not spending 3% of GDP on war, but he keeps not following through on his threats.

Maybe Trump can organize some kind of Mariel Boatlift to Spain?

Trump should love Spain.

Spain has a King.

Trump would love to be a King.

I have often stated, illegal aliens should leave the Country.

But I have always added the caveat of the effect that upon the economy.

So, maybe, Spain has come to a similar determination?

Our friend's sister, a pencil-thin starving artist, has been living in the shadows of Spain for a few years.

Thanks to the generosity of this former empire and dictatorship, she'll transition into the formal economy, as will tens of thousands of other people, and receive some of the benefits of Spanish residency: universal healthcare.

She is too far behind to add to the Spanish pension system, which is ranked higher than America's, but her life will improve nevertheless.

Wish we could say such things here.

This is what Reagan did in the 80s. Amnesty for a few million undocumented people here with no criminal record.

Republicans would shoot Reagan down like a rabid dog if he did that today.

The Immigration Reform and Control Act legalized most undocumented immigrants who had arrived in the country prior to January 1, 1982. The act altered U.S. immigration law by making it illegal to knowingly hire illegal immigrants, and establishing financial and other penalties for companies that employed illegal immigrants. en.wikipedia.org

@#8 ... illegal to knowingly hire illegal immigrants, and establishing financial and other penalties for companies that employed illegal immigrants. ...

Ho many companies have been prosecuted for hiring illegal aliens?

Or is the current administration acting more on the symptom (illegal aliens) rather than the cause (companies who crave those illegal aliens for the profits of their business)?

Wish I knew ...

So we should just give money away to people who didnt contribute?

Of course her life will "improve" if someone is giving away money.

But really, where is the money going to come from? Taxes arent meant to be funding lifestyles.

Hell, here in NC, we cant get state streets scraped of ice, but our taxes are higher than ever, as we have a democrat led state asking for more and more social programs.

At the end of Reagan's second term we gave amnesty to millions with the promise that the border would be secured. Well that didn't happen and tens more millions are here illegally. No more. Fool me once ... .

Can I see that promise in the language of the bill?

Can I see the evidence that the border isn't secure?

Explain to us how the mere existence of undocumented people make you a fool.

And seeing as it was Republicans who fooled you, why are you rewarding Republicans with your support?

#16 | Posted by snoofy at 2026-01-29 11:20 AM | Reply

You know what actually is in Reagan's amnesty?

Stiff penalties for employers who hire illegals.

That's never been strenuously enforced, especially by Republicans, because it would be bad for business.

Why isn't ICE going after the employers?

I ask the of questions you aren't sufficiently intellectually curious to think of on your own.

So that's why you can't come up answers.

Republicans hate immigrants because they know immigrants are fundamentally decent, hardworking people.

Republicans hate immigrants because Republicans know in their hearts that immigrants are better people than Republicans.

Republicans hate immigrants because they know immigrants are fundamentally decent, hardworking people.

They hate it because it proves their point. The illegal immigrants change the balance of power. This was done because the socialist would lose in the coming election. This is nothing but a dilution of the citizens power in order to keep socialist in charge.

See Snoofy doesn't really care about Feedom, or Democracy, Snoofy only cares about raw power.

The republicans in my state HIRE the immigrants because they are fundamentally decent and hardworking.

My clients express their discontent and distrust of their fellow white natives for being lazy and worthless.

The bill, clearly calls for more border enforcement spending
https://www.congress.gov/bill/99th-congress/senate-bill/1200

The issue was it required border enforcement funding, this never happened. Everything else in the bill did.
Hence the reason the Republicans are leery of any grand swap.

Can I see the evidence that the border isn't secure?

You asking these simple questions about immigration history just indicates how out of touch you are with the facts and history of your own country.

They might get a cursory understanding of the facts.

But they will never, ever be able to grasp the spirit

They will never be able to accept that their Republican grandparents and idols didn't always hate immigrants.

Excerpted from Ronald Reagan's farewell address:

I've been thinking a bit at that window. I've been reflecting on what the past 8 years have meant and mean. And the image that comes to mind like a refrain is a nautical one -- a small story about a big ship, and a refugee, and a sailor. It was back in the early eighties, at the height of the boat people. And the sailor was hard at work on the carrier Midway, which was patrolling the South China Sea. The sailor, like most American servicemen, was young, smart, and fiercely observant. The crew spied on the horizon a leaky little boat. And crammed inside were refugees from Indochina hoping to get to America. The Midway sent a small launch to bring them to the ship and safety. As the refugees made their way through the choppy seas, one spied the sailor on deck, and stood up, and called out to him. He yelled, ``Hello, American sailor. Hello, freedom man.''

A small moment with a big meaning, a moment the sailor, who wrote it in a letter, couldn't get out of his mind. And, when I saw it, neither could I. Because that's what it was to be an American in the 1980's. We stood, again, for freedom. I know we always have, but in the past few years the world again -- and in a way, we ourselves -- rediscovered it.

Based on that graph, looks like more immigrants came in during the BushJr administration than any other time.

I agree that's a very relevant statistic....or that it should be.

But the folks who spew lies about immigrants and crimes don't give a shit that it's not true.

It's immaterial to them. You seem to think it is.
