Letter from US Senators Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Edward J. Markey (D-MA) and Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) to DHS:

"We are alarmed by the horrifying news that Emmanuel Damas, a Haitian asylum-seeker and member of our community, died in the custody of US ICE on 2 March 2026. ICE's failure to provide timely medical care to Mr. Damas appears to have contributed to his worsening medical condition and tragic death."

Mr. Damas complained of a bad toothache and ICE staff at the medical clinic in the Central Arizona Florence Correctional Center gave him pain killers, but didn't escort him to a dentist or send for one. He then died from the untreated raging dental infection.

There is no "fixing" or "reforming" DHS or ICE other than scrapping them both completely and re-establishing the pre-9/11 INS so Immigration Judges (IJ) can administer legal and administrative due process for aliens, migrants, refugees.

Note that progressives in the US want to see ICE abolished, while "corporate" or AIPAC Democrats want to see ICE reformed.

This poor guy was in ICE custody for three years (detained by ICE before Dummkopf Trumpf seized power on 20 Jan 2025).

"Rene Lopez 'lost everything' and hopes to rebuild. He obtained US citizenship as a minor through his naturalized mother, spent years proving that was the case after the government said he wasn't a citizen."
