Puerto Rico Gov. Jenniffer Gonzalez-Colon declared a state of emergency over coastal erosion on the island's northern coast.

  • "Coastal erosion has "accelerated" in Puerto Rico because of rising sea levels, storm surges, atmospheric phenomena and the "geomorphological vulnerability" of multiple coastal communities. Those trends represent a "direct threat" to residences, public infrastructure, natural resources, and the safety of citizens on the island."

This type of erosion is more about building and developing along waterfront areas, which degrades natural barriers which previously absorbed the energy from the sea tides.

Puerto Rico has by far the highest per capita rate of military service of any state/territory. 23% of people born on the Island of Puerto Rico have served in the military dwarfing second place Alaska's at 8%.

Nearly 1 in 4 Puerto Ricans have served in the US military.

USMC aviation owes something to Puerto Rico. On 6 January 1914, 1LT Bernard L. Smith established the Marine Section of the Navy Flying School in the island municipality of Culebra, Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rican Infantry Regiment LTC Teofilo Marxuach (28 July 1877 - 8 November 1939) was the officer who ordered the first shots fired in World War I on behalf of the US when a German cargo liner tried to leave San Juan Bay without permission (21 March 1915).

My first unofficial military teachers in NYC were two Puerto Rican brothers who were Vietnam War veterans and they taught me a lot.
