Chinese President Xi Jinping has directed the People's Liberation Army (PLA) to be ready to militarily seize Taiwan by 2027. China considers Taiwan its territory, and any military effort to retake the island as a legitimate effort at reunification. A classified DIA report says China is rapidly building up its commercial ferry fleet to prepare for the invasion. Large ocean-going vessels have been modified to carry tanks for "D-Day style" amphibious operations. In 2022 alone, some 30 Chinese commercial ferries conducted military exercises involving PLA troops. China will have more than 70 of the large vessels by the end of 2026. Russia has agreed to equip and train the PLA to air-drop armored vehicles and conduct airborne operations. Dozens of CDC employees were notified late Friday night that they were being terminated. The agency's Washington office was terminated, as well as employees in the Global Health Center and the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. "Entire offices are being eliminated, including people in senior leadership roles." At least some officers in the Epidemic Intelligence Service were dismissed. The EIS officers are nicknamed "disease detectives" because they are frequently charged with investigating outbreaks and are part of a storied CDC training program. Some fellows in the Laboratory Leadership Service, who work on improving lab safety, also got notices. Leaders in the agency's Public Health Infrastructure Center also received notices, as well as the employees in the Office of Science. President Trump announced Friday he will raise tariffs on China in response to a move from Beijing to tighten its control over certain critical minerals and rare earth elements. Trump announced on Truth Social that he would impose a tariff of 100 percent on Chinese goods beginning Nov. 1 or sooner. Those tariffs will supersede existing duties already in place on Chinese goods. The president said his administration would also place export controls "on any and all critical software."
