What Trump Promised Oil CEOs as he Asked Them to Steer $1B to his Campaign

The Washington Post reports on Donald Trump's meeting with top oil executives. Trump reportedly told them they should raise $1 billion to help him win back the White House and during the same meeting Trump vowed to reverse President Biden's environmental rules. "Giving $1 billion would be a 'deal,' Trump said, because of the taxation and regulation they would avoid thanks to him," WAPO reports.

This is what Republicans have brought us to.

Trump's remarkably blunt and transactional pitch reveals how the former president is targeting the oil industry to finance his reelection bid. At the same time, he has turned to the industry to help shape his environmental agenda for a second term, including the rollbacks of some of Biden's signature achievements on clean energy and electric vehicles.

Despite the oil industry's complaints about Biden's policies, the United States is now producing more oil than any country ever has, pumping nearly 13 million barrels per day on average last year. ExxonMobil and Chevron, the largest U.S. energy companies, reported their biggest annual profits in a decade last year.

"You've been waiting on a permit for five years; you'll get it on Day 1," Trump told the executives, according to the recollection of the attendee.

At the dinner, Trump also promised that he would scrap Biden's "mandate" on electric vehicles - mischaracterizing ambitious rules that the Environmental Protection Agency recently finalized. The rules require automakers to reduce emissions from car tailpipes, but they don't mandate a particular technology such as EVs. Trump called them "ridiculous" in the meeting with donors.

Quid pro Dotard is at it again with his naked, blatant, transactional ways. The oil industry spent $400 million lobbying Congress last year to stop environmental regulations and rule implementations they despise, but Donald is willing to give them everything that they want if they'll kindly donate $1 billion towards his election this year. Screw fresh water, screw breathable air, just drill and burn, drill and burn.

What could possibly go wrong?

"I don't need anybody's money," Trump said after announcing his candidacy in June 2015. "I'm using my own money. I'm not using the lobbyists.. not using donors. I'm really rich."

"The Republicans have always had a challenge that they were the party of wealthy Americans and business. The problem is wealthy Americans will always be a very small minority of Americans. So for wealthy Americans, they have to convince at least some nonwealthy Americans to support their platform. How do you do that? Well, you do it with issues of identity, their sense of threat, their sense of fear, their sense of the world is changing and "I'm being left behind." It's very effective."

Former Vice President Joe Biden assured rich donors at a ritzy New York fundraiser that "nothing would fundamentally change" if he is elected.

Biden told donors at an event at the Carlyle Hotel in Manhattan on Tuesday evening that he would not "demonize" the rich and promised that "no one's standard of living will change, nothing would fundamentally change," Bloomberg News reported.

Biden's assurance to donors in New York came shortly after his appearance at the Poor People's Campaign Presidential Forum in Washington on Monday.

Biden said that poverty was "the one thing that can bring this country down" and listed several new programs to help the poor that he would fund if elected.

"We have all the money we need to do it," he said.

But speaking to wealthy donors in New York, Biden appeared to suggest that his plan would not involve big tax hikes on the rich.

You like to cite this one.

Is this supposed to differentiate Trump from Biden?

Trump's rich donors get fundamental changes in government policy if Trump wins, is that your point, is that why you voted for Trump?

Von Sizzinpants is having the oil execs write Executive Orders for him to enact in the off chance that he steals the WH again. None of these fat old men gives a damn if they destroy the planet; none of them will live long enough to reap what they sow. Thanks to our oil addiction, many of the people trying to come to this country are economic refugees emigrating from places made too hot for the poor to survive thanks to man-made climate change.

I remember getting a phone call from a fundraiser for Don Snorleone in 2016 asking for a donation. I kindly reminded them of this fact. They still pressed on until I asked them if they donated to him to which they said they did. I told them anyone that gives money to a billionaire is a special kind of stupid.

"How much have EV manufacturers dumped into the coffers for mandates and mandated subsidies?"

Compared to big oil? And how many invasions of Iraq did the miniscule EV lobby require from the Presidents they bought? Oh wait, the EV lobby can't afford to buy any Presidents. If Big Oil gets their way we'll be back in Baghdad in a very short time. Oh and the same people will also want to extend the Trump tax cuts for the rich so it will be another war on the credit card that all the MAGAs complain so nuch about. So, to summarize, elect another Big Oil, bought and paid for, President; then get ready for another war for oil.

That's true. You can't blame the Rich for asking for tax breaks. It's the republicans who voted in the policies that give tax breaks to the already rich (who obviously want and take those tax breaks) in order to getting huge donations that are to blame.

My brother was paying on $400,000 a college loan for his kids. A loan he would have never been able to pay off in his lifetime. That loan was just forgiven. He even got back some of the money he already paid. (Don't ask me how that works) so don't tell me Biden hasn't done things that benefit my family personally.

#32 | Posted by donnerboy at 2024-05-11 04:03 PM

#32. So Biden stole from others to bribe you and your brother to vote for him. How special.

#33 | Posted by BellRinger at 2024-05-12 01:08 PM

So Biden stole from others to bribe you and your brother to vote for him. How special.

Such a feckin' moron. First, Biden hasn't stolen anything from anybody. The loans being forgiven now are loans where people have paid for sometimes decades, but due to onerous terms many have paid more than the amount they originally borrowed.

Second, forgiveness is not taking from anyone. If the person dies tomorrow, the balance will not be paid either. It's the government's money (meaning every single person getting relief has partially self-funded through paying federal taxes anyway) and most taxpayers aren't selfish bricks like you and understand why loan relief is being offered.

Third, only shallow, insecure imbeciles would consider loan relief as a bribe for an expected political return. For those like you, forgiving loans is a reason NOT to vote for this President, so in a 50/50 society, I'd call it a wash.

And the only special thing around here is you. You constantly display your special education-based leaps of illogic on a nearly daily basis.

#34 | Posted by tonyroma at 2024-05-12 01:28 PM

And answer me this: Why can corrupt businessmen - like Trump - file bankruptcy after bankruptcy, shifting billions upon billions of dollars onto the backs of taxpayers, yet GOP politicians made sure that student loan recipients are never allowed to use bankruptcy to relieve their loan debts?

Where is the fairness in that? Why is the debt of billionaires so deserved of relief, but not the loan debt of lowly college students trying to better themselves to succeed in the very economy so many alleged business savants continue to fail in and then walk away from their creditors sometimes without losing a penny of their own money?

#35 | Posted by tonyroma at 2024-05-12 01:35 PM

"Where is the fairness in that?"

It's not supposed to be fair.
It's supposed to be cruel to the poor and the needy.
