Some Dems Fear Constitutional Convention is Coming

A simple line in the Constitution allows Congress to convene a rewrite session if two-thirds of state legislatures have called for one. The option has never been used, but most states have long-forgotten requests on the books that could be enough to trigger a new constitutional convention ...

They say that Republicans could call a convention on the premise, say, of producing an amendment requiring that the federal budget be balanced, then open the door for a free-for-all in which a multitude of other amendments are considered, including some that could restrict abortion access or civil rights.

"I do not want California to inadvertently trigger a constitutional convention that ends up shredding the Constitution"

I am all for changes to the constitution that say 1) corporations are not people and 2) money is not speech.

That can be done with an amendment.

Concern with going the constitutional convention route, instead, is that the MAGAts/GOP can open it up to destroy pretty much every progressive legal protection currently in existence. Or widen the door for Trump's SCOTUS to do the same.

It scares you because you know the American people do not feel the same way as progressives.

You are scared they may vote to dilute some progressive initiatives that have been imposed on a public that doesnt want it.

The only reason the traitor won was because people stayed home

I can't wait for Musk to rewrite this nation's constitution.

I guess I'd be less concerned if, for example, the MAGAts of the fine states of Wisconsin and North Carolina had not gerrymandered their minority status into control of the state house.

I don't put anything past the MAGATs and GOPhers and, as we all know, SCOTUS will do nothing to stop them. Heck, Trump's SCOTUS will probably give the Republicans explicit directions on how to go about it.

Go ahead, ---- around and find out. Same convention, the Pacific West and Northeast can leave the country as a peaceful separation between estranged distant cousins, leaving the red states to fend for themselves economically and militarily. Thoughts and prayers.

I can appreciate few people want something imposed upon them that would restrict their freedom.

Please list which progressive initiatives restrict your freedom.

Boaz will run like a scalded cat from that one.

Progressives ARE American people.

Here is what I hope. I hope some on the Right are listening to what will happen
when they are done ruining this country. On the World Stage, America will be a bigger
pariah than ever. Americans, especially the young, and those near retirement, will
leave this country in droves. The long dream of the GOP to destroy the remnants of
the Social Safety Net, will drive the final stake through the heart of the remnants of the
Middle Class, and accomplish yet another goal of the moneyed GOP. However, this will come
with consequences. The Middle Class does most of the work in this country, and another wave
of people will head for the doors and leave America, once this realization hits home. And they
will be leaving for good. Those that remain will be near psychotic as they scramble to eek out
any living, and crime and violent crime (especially against the rich) will soar.

It is a self-defeating policy to gut the Middle Class. It will tear the nation down and apart.

This is my prediction.

#14 | Posted by earthmuse at 2024-12-19 02:50 PM

This is no surprise. They're going to try it again.

A constitutional convention was supposed to happen in the '22 midterms
with the highly touted "Red Wave" that never happened.

Trump got all butthurt.

These are scary times. I don't remember a time when our country looked so perilous.

The various sections going their own ways could be a good thing.

The Northeast, Upper Midwest and Pacific coast could go one way or several, the South and intermountain West could go another way. Or ways.

The US is too big to be governed as one country, too varied in regional customs and norms.

Bring it On!

We can have a Progressive and prosperous country in the North and DumbFucistan down South and in the wide Open Spaces.

Sounds like a Plan!

Balkanization of America?

Sounds like a Plan!

It's Vlad Approved.

CORKY

Both Trump and Vlad want to rule the world. Neither one is the sharing type.

When it does come to loggerheads over hemispheres and oil, (that's where the money is) I wonder who is going to eventually try to knock off whom first.

You can all drop the "Commie!" Schtick.

It puts people to sleep.

And it obviously doesn't drive election results either

I think it's more of a Master/Sucker relationship.
