I received one of the 232 NIH grant "terminations" sent to scientists at Columbia last night. My research focuses on improving maternal and child health in the US. Also affected: ongoing clinical trials, research training programs, and research centers that aim to improve the health of Americans.

The Republicans don't see the masses as people, but exploitable resources. The oligarchs can afford excellent medical care, private surgeons, organ transplants, or months of platinum treatment at the Mayo Clinic. The masses cannot and therefore rely on prevention, NIH research, or Medicare. The oligarchs lead a Kali-like death cult AKA Republican voters. That's why Americans have no gun control or universal health insurance, an army of anti-vaxxers and trolls helping spread disease like COVID or measles, and less safe skies. Malthusian comes to mind.

Ending funding for medical research trials that are already underway is a waste of taxpayer money as well as being cruel and unusual treatment for the participants in those trials and the people who are anxiously and hopefully awaiting their results. Better hope you and your neighbor never find yourselves in the position of needing the results of those trials yourselves.

This FUBAR cutting of medical research is unfortunately not limited to Columbia University but is an essential feature of Musk and his DOGE bros assault on the federal government:

Chaos at the V.A.: Inside the DOGE Cuts Disrupting the Veterans Agency

Clinical trials have been delayed, contracts canceled and support staff fired. With deeper cuts coming, some are warning of potential harms to veterans.

At the Veterans Affairs hospital in Pittsburgh, researchers spent months preparing for a clinical trial of a new drug to treat advanced cancers of the mouth, throat and voice box.

They were ready last month to start enrolling patients--veterans whose cancer had spread to other tissue and who had run out of treatment options.

Then a problem arose.

The hospital was unable to renew the job of a key staff member involved in running the study, a typically routine process thwarted by a hiring freeze imposed under the government-cutting project led by President Trump and Elon Musk. Suddenly, the clinical trial was on hold.

"They were ready to enroll," said Alanna Caffas, the chief executive of the Veterans Health Foundation, which administers the trials. "They had the lab kits on site. They had the drug to dispense. But they couldn't get the clinical research coordinator renewed."

Inefficiency, stupidity and cruellty. But what else would you expect from 2 narcissistic billionaires and their small-minded Republican backers?

For the fiscal year ending June 30, 2024, the total value of the endowment was $14.8 billion. Columbia University produced a return of 11.5% on the managed assets in its endowment portfolio for FY24. The University's trailing five and ten-year returns are 8.5% and 7.4%, respectively.

#11 | Posted by homerj at 2025-03-12 07:10 AM

Not renewing funding for medical research trialsis one thing, especially if you give people a heads up so that they can plan and prepare for those cuts. Cutting off funding for trials already underway is another thing entirely. This is true for any of the cuts Musk/Trump are making. People should be given time to plan, prepare, look for other funding sources or wind down programs that can't be sustained. The cruelty is the point though. But they want to traumatize people as Russ Voight said, and in that they are succeeding. And in the process they are also wasting all the time and money that went into the trials/programs that were underway and are suddenly cut off. It didn't have to be this way.

I'm sure the free speech warriors will be along shortly to condemn the specific targeting of a university by a lawless potus wielding an unconstitutional power to punish the entire institution for the protests of the minority.

Punishing us all, really, since the fruit of that research would have been enjoyed by all.

"the total value of the endowment was $14.8 billion"

which never seems to serve a purpose other than to brag about the size of your endowment.

Continuing your research would be an appropriate use of this endowment, if you believe in the value of your research.

But no....let's start firing everyone instead the instant the government funding stops....even when you're sitting on almost $15 Billion.

#18 | Posted by snoofy at 2025-03-12 12:52 PM

Endowments aren't slush funds. Donations are almost always given with specific strings attached and the passive income from the endowments is what is used for things like scholarships, endowed professorships, new buildings/services/departments.

But way to excuse this blatantly authoritarian behavior because, you know, meh ...

"which never seems to serve a purpose other than to brag about the size of your endowment."

Quick, what's the monthly interest income on $14.8 billion?

I guess that income serves no purpose!

#27 | Posted by Nixon at 2025-03-15 08:33 AM

"That I in no way whatsoever excused or defended this funding cut."

You stated if the research was valuable, they should be spending the endowment to make up for the funding cut.

So you were what, triangulating the funding cut?

While also implying if they don't spend the endowment, then perhaps the cuts were justified. If they won't open their own purse, how valuable can the research really be?

You tell us. If they don't want to spend their own money, doesnt that suggest the cuts might be reasonable?

#28 | Posted by snoofy at 2025-03-15 09:33 AM

I guess the questions are too hard again.

They either don't know how their BS ramblings look or they're just disingenuous.

Sure, he didn't explicitly defend the cuts. But he definitely insinuated they're justified.

#35 | Posted by jpw at 2025-03-16 04:03 AM

Right, he said, a good way to tell if the research is truly valuable, is do they make up the funding cut from their endowment.
And that tells us the research isn't valuable, because the institution isn't stepping in to pick up the tab.
So the cuts were justified after all.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who can see what he's actually saying.

#36 | Posted by snoofy at 2025-03-16 10:31 AM

I don't like the funding cuts to valuable research, but I also understand not sending federal funds to an institution that allows protests on their campus that is discriminatory, and violent towards other students on that campus.

I have to reconcile it this way, if a group like the KKK were doing some sort of valuable research, should the feds help fund that?

Columbia should be getting research grants, and it should be shutting down blatantly illegal protests. It's unfortunate that they didn't keep that clear line.

#37 | Posted by kwrx25 at 2025-03-16 12:29 PM
