Trump Admin Threatens to Stop Social Security If DOGE Can't Have Data

Donald Trump's interim Social Security chief suggested Thursday night he will effectively turn off the agency that manages the essential safety net program for seniors and the disabled, if Elon Musk and his so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) can't access the non-anonymized sensitive personal information and data of hundreds of millions of Americans, based on a judge's order.

"We are not cutting Social Security" is hard to square with DOGE laying of thousand of Social Security employees, closing Social Security offices, and limiting phone services.

More: Dudek's threat to block SSA employees from using the agency's IT systems " a move that could halt Social Security payments " came in response to a judge's temporary restraining order in a case brought by the AFL-CIO labor union. The order bars Social Security Administration officials from allowing DOGE, including Musk, and the SSA's DOGE team to access personally identifiable information. It also directs Musk and DOGE to delete from their possession all non-anonymized personal data, and bars them from having access to SSA computers or code.

Judge Ellen Lipton Hollander wrote that the SSA had likely violated administrative and privacy laws when it gave DOGE "unbridled access to the personal and private data of millions of Americans, including but not limited to Social Security numbers, medical records, mental health records, hospitalization records, drivers' license numbers, bank and credit card information, tax information, income history, work history, birth and marriage certificates, and home and work addresses."

She added that the "defendants, with so-called experts on the DOGE Team, never identified or articulated even a single reason for which the DOGE Team needs unlimited access to SSA's entire record systems, thereby exposing personal, confidential, sensitive, and private information that millions of Americans entrusted to their government."

Hollander's order does allow the SSA to grant DOGE members "access to redacted or anonymized data and records" if they receive standard training for employees who generally work with Social Security data systems, to ensure they understand applicable federal laws, regulations, and policies that protect the privacy of personally identifiable information.

In other words, Musk and DOGE must comply with existing privacy laws. According to Dudek, Trump's acting commissioner for the Social Security Administration, this requirement is a reason to threaten to halt the safety net program that 71 million Americans rely on for support.

Dudek's comments come as DOGE moves to close dozens of SSA offices, potentially limit phone services, and demand that beneficiaries travel to visit offices in-person to verify their identities " changes that stand to overwhelm the system and prevent seniors and the disabled from receiving their checks.

Do it....shut it down.

You want to see real anger?

I am going to phone up my magat cousins who've scammed social security for decades when it does and send them my thoughts and prayers and then turn them in for illegally selling marijuana to the FBI.

So he plans to hold senior citizens hostage in response to a temporary restraining order? Seems like escalation and governmental overreach, don't you think? What's the rush? They will probably get what they want eventually after the judge ensurse due dilligence is being followed with regarding privacy concerns. Just follow the law:

Judge bars DOGE team from SS records in scathing ruling

A federal judge Thursday issued a temporary restraining order barring Elon Musk's so-called Department of Government Efficiency team from having access to personally identifiable information from the Social Security Administration.

If Trump actually kills Social Security, the number of people in this country with a serious and at times desperate motivation to kill him expands by about 75 million.

This is so crazy.....forever, when a politician comes near SS, they get attacked so badly they are scared to death to be attacked to any kind of SS cut.

Now we have a guy threatening to shut it off......LOL.

crazy times.......

Trump Admin Threat to Stop SocSec If DOGE Can't Have Data

ROFLMMFAO

Perhaps the ONLY thing that he could do to get Republicans to impeach him.

Taggart, have your Proud Boys to do a "Number Six" on a few of these retirement homes.

Just to speed this inevitable process along.

"If Trump actually kills Social Security, the number of people in this country with a serious and at times desperate motivation to kill him expands by about 75 million."

There will be knock-on effects.

As Republicans steal people's parents and grandparents often sole source of income, many will contemplate acting directly against the system that is deliberately harming their loved ones.

One might even pre-suppose that Trump is counting on this, so he can have even more casus belli to declare martial law when his border report comes back on Hitler's Birthday.

"Really, I want to turn it off"

Sometimes, they say the quiet part out loud.

Trump Admin Threat to Stop SocSec

I hope they shut it down.

People need to remember the value of having competent people in the government.

I say it more than I should..."sometimes things need to get worse before they'll get better".

I wouldn't imagine saying that about social security because it's such a massive part of our culture and shouldn't be threatened like this....but here we are.

#11 | Posted by eberly at 2025-03-21 04:24 PM

Sometimes things just get worse.

#12 | Posted by snoofy at 2025-03-21 04:28 PM

No one is saying the won't kill Social Security, like they did Roe.
I guess we can thank a hundred thousand unwanted babies for that.
Thanks, unwanted babies that should have been aborted!
You helped a handful of Americans understand that their country is ending.

"Really, I want to turn it off and let the courts figure out how they want to run a federal agency"

That's probably the safest thing to do.

I was out in a big public event today - wonderful event. Not political at all - the opposite, actually. I heard people talking about Trump. I wasn't sure if it was good or bad. I eavesdropped. Turns out there was some real anger about Trump, Musk, and Social Security. Anger that took me by surprise in how direct it was. It was so out of place.

Most of me hopes Trump gets his shht together and doesn't harm SS or access to it. Otherwise it's going to be one big FAFO and I don't think it's going to be pleasant for him, Musk, or any of the GOP that backs it.

Another part of me says I've had enough of all that's going on and it needs to be neutralized, stopped, ended. I don't much care how.

If this goes sourh and normal SS payments are disrupted, I see massive liability class action litigation.

AARP, you seeing this?

#16 | Posted by fresno500 at 2025-03-21 06:14 PM

What's the issue?

Trump's commerce secretary just said today nobody would miss it and understand it's for a good reason!!!

I hope it really happens, I really do. Some people need a wakeup call to how evil this regime is.

Ending my SS would be a literal death sentence, as there is no employer who would ever consider hiring someone my age with my xrays. I know this because thats what happened to me 6 years ago when I attempted to go back to work when my meager savings evaporated mostly because of inflation. Although they apologized profusely, I was regrettablydeemed "a walkin' Workman's Comp risk." The inescapable truth is, I--and millions of other retireees--would become homeless rather quickly, some lierally overnight, all so rich slime like Musk & Trump can get another #%?! tax break. It's a little late in the game for to this old buckaroo to say avoir to this benighted land, so I'd probably be looking for some justice, no matter the form it took.

crazy times.......

LOL and in the grand scheme we've only ordered the drinks as we consider apps.

Wait until they actually render SS useless (they won't outright cut it in order to keep an angle alive to gaslight) and kill sufficient levels of VA benefits that countless GWOT vets start thinking their urban combat skills might be useful once more. Or the nonsensical trade policies and tariffs sink enough people into poverty that a critical mass of people have nothing to lose.

The rich will be eating their entrees safely behind walls and private security authorized to kill us proles on sight. Meanwhile those of us who haven't sunk into poverty will become the target of the desperate and angry.

Shut it down.
But first, stock up on pikes.
That's where the future lies: pikes ... with heads.
