Florida Man Can Now Open Carry

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier declared state residents are free to openly carry guns statewide after an appeals court decision that struck down Florida's nearly 40-year-old ban. Uthmeier, a Republican appointed to the job earlier this year by Gov. Ron DeSantis who is running for the post in 2026, sent out a "guidance" memo Monday to law enforcement agencies and local prosecutors asserting the 1st District Court of Appeal ruling is in effect statewide. "Meaning that of last week, open carry is the law of the state," Uthmeier wrote on his official X account in a post that included the memo.

While Uthmeier said open carry is now legal, he said that other gun laws remain in force, including one that bans the carrying of guns into courthouses, bars, schools and onto college campuses. The attorney general also stated that someone who is armed could be charged criminally if they refuse to leave after being asked to do so by a private property owner. Florida's large theme parks such as Disney World prohibit people from bringing weapons onto the property.

In an average year, 3,108 people die and 6,358 are wounded by guns in Florida, which has the 23rd-highest rate of gun violence in the US. Gun violence costs Florida $40.3 billion each year, of which $875.9 million is paid by taxpayers. 61% of gun deaths are suicides and 36% are homicides. This is compared to 56% and 40% nationwide, respectively. 23,839,600 people live in the Sunshine State.

By contrast, in 2024 the entire country of Canada (41,712,712 people) suffered a grand total of 286 murders by an assailant with a firearm. Ten times more people die in the one state of Florida than the ten provinces and three territories of Canada combined.

Open carry is a cultural regression.

A regression that makes me and everyone near me subject to assassination after someone's next brain fart.

Yes, some of these people have gone out of their way to accost me and my wife. Why? You tell me.

But I think that they can't take out their pensises in public, so they wave their guns.

I've written this before, and it bears repeating: open carry is for white people only. Some Hispanic or African American Floridian will get shot over this in about 3...2...1...

Incident free...

The bullying aspect of open carry is one aspect of "incidences".

It's funny how we all saw these same themes about people packing heat on their hips played out in western movies.

Funny that the Old West was eager to get rid of open carry and did so the first chance.

Even in Texas, when the population was arguably a lot more reactionary than it is today.

Open carry degrades the quality of everyday life.

Kind of like smoking dope in a Dairy Queen, except that I have never seen anyone use marijuana in a Dairy Queen but I have seen them open carry.

Funny that the Old West was eager to get rid of open carry and did so the first chance.

This is true.

Apparently many frontier towns implemented strict gun control laws, banning open carry of firearms in public places and requiring visitors to check their weapons at designated locations like police stations or hotels.

These regulations were established by community leaders to curb the frequent gun violence, drunkenness, and danger that arose from easy access to firearms in crowded establishments.

Want to see your kids die by accidental shooting, or suicide, or murder...get them a high powered rifle and let them keep it in their closet.

Purely hypothetical situation, If I'm a bad guy with guns and going to do some bad things the first targets will be the open carry dorks so they can't stop me once the plan to do bad things is in motion. These open carry dorks never think about the targets they are making themselves to be.

Florida man, knock yourself out.

#16: Yup. After looking for openly carried firearms, check for bulges in the clothing. Target selected? Plink away! cdn2.iconfinder.com

And anybody can be robbed. If a Floridian is walking around with an expensive pistol, three guys in ski masks will just ambush him from behind. Bye bye expensive firearm.
