Back when I was working my commute was 18 miles one way... about 25 minutes.

And, fwiw...

Back in the day, when I worked in a Louisville, KY manufacturing facility (major corp), there was a group (a car full) of workers who drove two hours to work each day from a rural area (very rural, from how they described it to me at the time) of the Kentucky backwoods to their job in the city.

Their foremen told me they were excellent workers.

I enjoyed talking with them. They told me how they adjusted their sleep cycles to be alert at work (a 200-ton punch press can be deadly), and how they shared the driving so they can be alert.

I learned a lot, A Lot, from what they told me.

Great people, imo.

Well, not working, but my commute to high school was 90 minutes each way.

My father commuted 76 miles one way or around 1.5 to 2 hours from around 50 to retirement at 65.

I commute about 20 feet since I was in my mid 40's.

In that way I have bettered my father.

"My father commuted 76 miles one way"

Mine saw that, and wanted nothing of it. When he moved the family back to STL from NOLA right before I was born, he got out a map and drew a 5 mile circle around where he knew he'd be working, and SWORE he'd live in that circle, which he did until he passed at 78.

As I recall, it took him six minutes door to door.

"...my commute to high school was 90 minutes each way."

So did you do homework on the way home, or on the way back in the morning?

Dreadfully, I'd always be the latter.

Yeah, back when I was a kid, the goal of my parents was to make my life better than theirs.

imo, my parents succeeded.

My commute was 200 miles. Since I worked a 7/7 schedule I didn't think it too bad. Most folk drive more than 200 miles locally a week.

@#7 ... So did you do homework on the way home, or on the way back in the morning? ...

Written homework was always done at home, sometimes until 9PM. Which was tough due to the 5AM alarm clock the next morning.

Reading textbooks and studying was sometimes done in transit when my friends weren't on the ferry or train.

I often shared the rides on the train and ferry with friends from junior high. We played a lot of bridge (the card game). For four years, we played a lot of bridge. The ride on the subway (Manhattan into Brooklyn) was done solo.

The odd thing is that currently I have not a clue about how to play bridge. ...

"My commute was 200 miles."

My commute at one time was also 200 miles. But I only drove in on Monday and returned home on Friday night. I worked 10-12 hours a day and I stayed (ate and slept) at my parents house during the week or with friends. But I had a beautiful family and a 3 acre farm to return to so it was worth it. I eventually got a job close by. But that's how I got my username. By driving over Donner Summit every weekend (except when it was snowing).

And now that I am retired I drew a 100 foot circle around my fridge and I have vowed to live within it and so far I have done pretty good! Now my commute is about ten feet.

Ah, the days when you could build a career in one company, and look forward to a stable income and maybe even a defined benefit pension.
