Secretary of State Antony Blinken reaffirmed the U.S. commitment for Ukraine to eventually join NATO but held back commitments ahead of the alliance's annual summit, which will take place in Washington in July. "Ukraine will become a member of NATO. Our purpose at the summit is to help build a bridge to that membership," Blinken told reporters Thursday in Brussels.

Hmmm. There's an idea. Maybe Taiwan should be a part of NATO (even though it's not in the Atlantic we could make an exception) That would sure put a monkey wrench in the China Werks.

Maybe we should even get Japan to join.

That would sure pwn them Commies!

Maybe we should even get Japan to join.

And include Hawaii.

So, the question in this thread seems to be evolving into...

Should countries that believe in Democracy band together to fight the autocratic and dictatorial forces that oppose them (from within and without)?

It is interesting that Republicans in the House seem to be opposed to that concept.

To which I ask... why?

@#7 ... It is interesting that Republicans in the House seem to be opposed to that concept. ...

To avoid ambiguity, by "opposed to that concept" I was referring to the concept of Democracy.

... and South Korea.

I just tossed in Hawaii because I read the other day that despite being a US state, Hawaii is not covered by the NATO treaty.

Is Ukraine a Democracy? No elections, Rule by decree, Massive corruption on every level of administration.

I see no functional democracy in Ukraine at this time.

After the War? Who knows?

But it's not one now for sure. Even less than Russia is.

Putin won re election. The forms were observed. Even if the outcome was rigged.

Zelinsky won't even go through the motions of democracy.

No elections,.. the Judicial system, a figleaf for pure autocracy.

Labor protections gutted.

All to make life easier for the leadership class.

There sure are a bunch of posters here that can't read and aren't up to speed on current events.

So let this Chinese national educate you Americans and stupid Canadians on what Blinken said about Taiwan.

"We do not support Taiwan's independence"

And to be even more clear we do not support Taiwan declaring independence. And he has never said we won't come to Taiwans defense.

And Pooh Bear claims he does not intend to invade as long as they don't declare independence.

Wonder which one speaks with forked tongue? I'm going with both.

In a meeting between U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping the Chinese leader told the American side that Beijing does not have plans for a massive invasion of Taiwan.

Yeah. We'll see.

And it's really up to Japan. We have 85 US military facilities on Japanese territory that could be attacked. But I will bet they are still a little sore at China for all the rapes and torture and murder the Chinese perpetrated on the Japanese people at the Nanjing Massacre. And 60% of the Japanese people support defending Taiwan. So it probably won't be a too hard sell.

After his resignation, former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo boldly claimed that "a crisis for Taiwan is a crisis for Japan."

In answer to Lamp's question above...

So, the question in this thread seems to be evolving into...

"Should countries that believe in Democracy band together to fight the autocratic and dictatorial forces that oppose them (from within and without)?"

Yes, but primarily in cases where the country/countries against are actively being agressors and either invading or 'saber rattling' to invade other democratic freely elected countries...

We cannot fight every war, but such unified alliances I believe serve as a very real deterrent against violent actors on the world stage. They should help to contain and prevent the spread of wars into larger regional conflicts. As they were intended to do.
