... The federal tax agency's level of service for phone queries hit 88%, topping the 85% target, slashed call waiting times from almost 30 minutes to 3 minutes, saving taxpayers 1.4 million hours waiting on hold and dealt with a million more calls than in the 2023 filing season, the Treasury said in a news release.

The introduction of paperless filing and other new technology also was hailed with taxpayers availing themselves of a new and improved "Where's My Refund" online tool 275 million times while the number of taxpayers who received face-to-face help at 70 walk-in assistance centers across the country jumped by 170,000 -- with the centers offering special hours of 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

OpEd: The Inflation Reduction Act Unleashes A Tougher IRS (August 2022)
www.forbes.com

... Only the Criminal Investigation Division of the IRS can carry guns, but the IRS has been buying more guns and ammunition in recent years, snapping up nearly $700,000 in ammo in early 2022. The bullet buy prompted Representatives Matt Gaetz (R-FL) and Jeff Duncan (R-SC) to introduce the "Disarm the IRS Act," to prohibit the IRS from buying ammunition.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) tweeted, "87,000 IRS agents will be hired with $80 billion taxpayer dollars when the Senate Reconciliation bill passes this weekend. And they're buying more guns & ammo too.

Lower to middle income Americans & small businesses will be the primary targets of Democrat's new IRS force." ...

Well, as the season wraps, I've certainly noticed a huge uptick in responses, and response time.

Call me crazy, but I believe it's incumbent on government to be able to answer how do I pay my taxes correctly?

@#4 ... I've certainly noticed a huge uptick in responses, and response time. ...

I expect there is still more to be done.

However, given the battle the GOP put up to get the IRS funding in the Inflation Reduction Act, I'm not holding my breath for additional funding.

A large part of the IRS funding can't be rescinded, since a chunk is going to the large-scale system overhaul.

And, of course the rhetoric about the "armed agents" is nothing but partisan bullschittt. The majority of "new"
agents are replacing old ones, and the vast majority of those won't be carrying guns. But ultimately, they will be able to focus on some higher-end scofflaws. It's about time.

The people who say "guns don't kill people" are telling us to be worried about armed IRS agents.

What's the concern, since guns don't kill people?

@#8 ... Hundreds turned away from Atlanta IRS office as tax deadline looms ...

I wonder what that would have been like if the IRS had not beem able to gear up their support capabilities.

Something else I wonder... of those complaining about the IRS and lines and wait times, how many were opposed to the IRS getting additional funding in the Inflation Reduction Act?

Something I noticed doing my taxes this year. All of the IRS processing centers are in red states-KY, MO, OH, TX, NC and Utah.

Odd.

This isn't at all about making an efficient democracy and USA government. It is all about giving our taxes away to other countries like Ukraine and Israel instead of fixing America. What have either of these countries ever done to make USA better? NAME one thing that is meaningful?

Odd.

Why Odd??

Sounds like it was announced in Sept 2016.

"consolidation was announced in September 2016"

The closures are a part of consolidation efforts which began in 2003 under then serving IRS Commissioner Mark W. Everson. Those efforts led to a consolidation of ten sites into five locations that process paper tax returns: locations were Covington, Kentucky/Cincinnati; Fresno, California; Austin, Texas; Kansas City, Missouri; and Ogden, Utah. Following the closures announced this fall, only two sites that process paper returns would remain open after 2024: Kansas City, Missouri, and Ogden, Utah.

If Ukraine disappeared tomorrow no one in the West would notice.

Except for Biolabs, for some reason the US puts biolabs in places that have little regulation.

The first part of your current alias' comment is that it does not know.

In response to a question I poised.

So maybe, the appropriate question to ask is, what is your current alias' point?

Ukraine is fighting our enemy Russia for us at 1/100 the cost.
Israel...well...they make our lives harder.
The rest of the foreign aid basically buys us a huge bullying stick to get these countries to do what we want and keep them open to trade. (Hint: One of the best investments we've ever made)

Kind of hard to do worse than 2023. The inspector general report was pretty harsh.

"As of last summer, 63% of new audits targeted taxpayers with income of less than $200,000," reports the Journal. "Only a small overall share reached the very highest earners, while 80% of audits covered filers earning less than $1 million."

"It's almost like they didn't tell us the truth the first time around. But that's not even the most embarrassing thing in the report: The IRS had set a goal of hiring 3,700 new agents in the first year of boosted funding. Instead, in the first six months, they'd hired 34.

Awkwardly, "revenue agent staffing had actually decreased by 8%, or more than 650 employees, between the end of fiscal 2019 and March 2023," per a previous watchdog report. And it's not just hiring that's in trouble: The agency has completed just 33 percent of its fiscal year 2023 milestones outlined in its strategic operating plan, which is ... tough given that the year is over."

So? Russia doesn't have to be the enemy of the US.

Putin was looking for coop, and talking under Clinton.

I don't see why before the war the US didn't demand to discuss options with Russia.

My guess through implication is the US leadership wanted Russia to invade. Russia wanted to invade, without alternative.

Everyone got what they wanted, but Ukraine, it's citizens and the US tax payers.
