The North Atlantic could get as many as seven major hurricanes of category three strength or over this year, which would be more than double the usual number, the US weather agency NOAA has warned.

I always take these doom porn headlines with a huge grain of salt. They can't predict the weather accurately over the span of a week much less 3-4 months ahead of time.

@#1 ... They can't predict the weather accurately over the span of a week much less 3-4 months ahead of time. ...

Last year's hurricane predictions turned out to be pretty good.

One thing to keep in mind... hurricanes are heat engines. They thrive on the warm, moist layer of atmosphere just above the ocean's surface. That is what feeds them.

The warmer the ocean is, the warmer and more moist that layer of air becomes.

So, the warmer ocean does not necessarily make more hurricanes. But the hurricanes that do fire up tend to intensify more quickly and more severely because their heat engine is being fed by that warmer, more moist layer of atmosphere just above the surface of the ocean.

They can't predict the weather accurately over the span of a week much less 3-4 months ahead of time.

Last year NOAA predicted 12-17 named storms, 5-9 Hurricanes, and 1-4 major hurricanes.

What happened?

20 named storms, 7 hurricanes and 3 major hurricanes.

Good map in this article showing the hurricane MDR (Main Development Region) being significantly warmer than usual...

This is why we need Trump as president.

With the power of one sharpie, he will keep America safe from hurricanes.

Plus, he's got the nukes!

@#3 ... Last year NOAA predicted ...

Another thing to keep in mind when looking at these predictions, is that there is nearly always a "odds percentage" associated with the prediction.

The cited BBC article doesn't show it, but the Axios article in #4 does...

... By the numbers: The NOAA is forecasting the season will bring 85% odds of an above normal season, with 17-25 named storms of tropical storm intensity or greater, eight to 13 of which will become hurricanes, and four to seven major hurricanes of Category 3 or greater. ...
[emphasis mine]

So... in their prediction NOAA is saying there's a 15% chance they may be incorrect.

Wind-driven rains, ice and heat is observably getting unmanageable, imo.

I'm guessing around July 11-13 we will see community smelting.

This one I was proud of, being perhaps my worst poem ever:

burning holes in the o-zone
tropics and icecaps for oil and gold
nuclear spring, autumn, winter and summer
sometimes war just happens
lawns will be trampled under

earthquakes and lightning
volcanoes, blizzards and blighting
peace comes through craters
and sometimes through criping

grandmothers melting
community smelting
a wolf dressed up as the
candy colored clown

daisy cutter please move over
mighty leaf blower

Well, they're not predicting the weather, they're predicting the likelihood of a number of events occurring with varying severity. It's not the same thing.

But I get your point, and I'll point out that you're just misinterpreting the information. Weather is a game of probabilities. Sure, some weather reporters are just bad at presenting the information, which mostly comes from the same places no matter where you are. But if a weather reporter says there's a 80% of rain, and it doesn't rain, that doesn't make them wrong.

Best predictor of tomorrow's weather is today's weather.
