Ron Filipkowski: Even by Trump standards, this was pretty nuts.

FTA:

Donald Trump woke up with morning with new polls showing Harris leading nationally and in most swing states, and he had nothing on his schedule for venting other than an early tee time. So he hastily called for a press conference at Mar-a-Lago this morning on Truth Social, and national media dutifully attended with many networks covering it live (sadly).

But it was an embarrassment. A humiliation. A disaster.

Here are 10 clips of some of the biggest lowlights:

I haven't seen it. I've seen bits and pieces of his press conference with the black journalists conference.

I'd really like to have a compare/contrast with the pressers Trump has done since Biden has dropped out and the pressers that Harris has done during that same time frame.

That would be neat.

"Trump Team Says Trainwreck Press Conference Is a Sign of Discipline

A campaign spokeswoman said Donald Trump is focused on "issues" right after a press conference in which Trump did not discuss a single policy idea.

"This is a disciplined campaign," said Leavitt. "And we're disciplined because we are led by President Trump, who wakes up every day and focuses on the issues that matter to the American people."

But Trump was anything but disciplined during his meandering rant Thursday, as he ricocheted between making wild claims about his crowd sizes and weak excuses for his lackluster week of campaigning.

In one afternoon, Trump seemingly flip-flopped on whether he would agree to debate Harris, going from not debating her at all to offering three dates.

Trump is so unrestrained that he couldn't help but put his foot in his mouth, once again attacking Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, who refused to overturn his state's presidential election results in 2020."

This "press" conference was a complete joke.
Not only did trump lie continuously, as in I dare you to find one sentence that didn't have a lie in it, the "press" didn't challenge him at all. Even better he whined and complained about the equipment at the NABJ event (that was also a lie) and he couldn't hear questions being asked. No one including him could hear the questions being asked. Generally speaking the whole thing was "yuck." There was no planning, no thought, no logistics, and a pathetic weak press.

It did have the benefit of showing the world just who trump is, so "yay" for that.

On trump himself and what he said? Totally delusional. He actually said he had a bigger crowd on January 6th than Martin Luther King Jr. had at his "I Have a Dream" speech. Seriously. I had to mute him several times it was so unhinged, disconnected from reality, not to mention just plain weird.

According to Republican Math, he did!

FTW: "Republican Math" is identifiable when you see the following equation: 1 + 1 = Whatever today's talking points require.

The phenomenon also expresses itself in the nomenclature. For example: Walz is THE MOST LIBERAL PICK, EVER! And if Shapiro would've been chosen, he would've been THE MOST LIBERAL PICK, EVER! And if Mark Kelly ...

...well, you get the picture. Republicans have called every Dem nominee the "most liberal", even back when William Proxmire was alive.

I've learned to take every claim of the Republican Party with a MOUNTAIN of salt.

Just like I take the P25 folks at their word.

But you'd be okay if, after 47 was inaugurated, Dems used P25 as a blueprint going forward, right? Non-loyalists to the cause should be purged from government jobs, agreed?

"In this instance you are completely wrong."

I've lived through it since Proxmire.

Or, more accurately, since JFK. EVERY Dem nominee was "THE MOST LIBERAL EVER!" Back in the Proxmire days, through (at least) the Kerry nomination, the self-appointed arbiters would retroactively change the determination of the nominee's vote to "the most liberal". And VOILA! That's how Dem nominees got labeled MOST LIBERAL despite legislating alongside known ultra-liberals.

Ultimately: Was Obama more liberal than Bernie Sanders?!? NFW.

You keep lying about that. It doesn't change the fact: she's electric at rallies. Did you listen to Philly, where she introduced the next Veep? OF COURSE YOU DIDN'T. So you'll never (have to) admit the undeniable vibe of the crowd.

I'll never understand why you prefer self-delusion.

Funny, given you supported Biden, wholeheartedly, right up until he was removed.

"...admit Vance is the ugly intersection between bad choice and non-vetting?"

I felt that way too, until I started looking into him over the past couple of days. I was aware of his backstory, obviously. Where I've found myself kinda liking him is not just his willingness to take questions from media figures who clearly hate him, but he mostly answers the questions straight up and does so mostly on-topic and without filibustering the questions.

Her rallies draw a crowd, in part, because they are dove-tailed with free concerts. Further, she is fricking CRINGE. She went from being someone some in the party wanted to see jettisoned prior to the Biden debate to someone who has been reinvented but 4 years ago she got destroyed when having to actually compete for a nomination to a point where she failed upward into it because Democrats had no other option to insert that wouldn't anger the identity politics base, and more importantly, she was the only one who had the easiest claim to Biden's campaign war-chest.

She's NEVER been "electric". She is NOT Obama 2.0.

Maybe nothing, but they speak LOUDLY to this political junkie. What it tells me is there is a larger faction than we consider, of voters who might have a public persona one way, but vote differently when alone in the booth, and they realize their, their daughters, and their grandkids' rights are on the ballot. Women and men both.

Maybe she is some kind of a Phoenix.

Maybe she was being deliberately held-down by her boss.

Maybe she has been re-born into something she has never been before.

It's possible.

Sometimes people don't realize their full potential until they are thrust into extremely difficult situations.

Having said that, if she's some kind of budding phenom, WHY is she being so carefully guarded? WHY has she avoided questions from a press (that is quite sycophantic)? No interviews? MAYBE one by the end of September (I'm guessing with Jen Psaki)?

She has the advantage of a relatively short calendar.

Typically, in a presidential election, "vibes" only go so far....and then a candidate has to go through a vetting process - interviews that aren't pure fluff; press conferences that include at least a couple of skeptical reporters, at least one debate against opponents.

She's done NONE of this so far. She has yet to face down any kind of meaningful challenge.

#29 | Posted by BellRinger at 2024-08-09 12:30 AM | Reply

"She has yet to face down any kind of meaningful challenge."

Trump had a presser today, and he lied for an hour.

Is that okay with you if Kamala does the same? Because there's your answer.

If I was the advisor...hell, if YOU were the advisor...we'd both give the same wisdom: don't go out there until the rules are the same.

Put another way...why are you okay with your nominee lying for an hour? His J6 crowd was NOT bigger than MLK's "I have a dream" speech...you know that, right?

"Trump had a presser today, and he lied for an hour.

Yes. It's why we have independent news outlets. These outlets exist to fact-check. To expose lies. To hold politicians and those in power accountable.

Because one politician goes before the press and tells some lies (as Trump did and have countless others before him to various extents have) is NOT an excuse for her to simply dodge the press altogether. ESPECIALLY when most of the media carry a LOT of water for Democrats and progressives.

Seriously, why do you think it's totally good that she hasn't taken (and is showing no indication of doing so) questions from the press? Vance has been doing it on a near daily basis since he was selected as VP and was doing so even prior to that.

It depends. It depends on who she does her likely solo interview with and it really depends on if she holds a true press conference and takes some tough and probing questions.

Ever notice you NEVER answer any of my questions except to deflect?

Trump has had massive rallies and yet his ceiling has always been tremendously low.

Again, maybe Harris has transformed but I've never been into "hype".

Show me something tangible.

Respect works both ways. If she and her supporters want my respect, then she needs to either crap or get off the pot.

You want me to watch her rallies? I don't watch Trump rallies. I don't watch rallies because it's a bunch of rah-rah crap.

As a political junkie I want substance wherever I can find it. I want policy proposals; as clearly defined as possible. Yes, the politicians behind the proposals matter too.

Clarity on policies doesn't happen without challenge, be it from an opponent, a journalist, and independent journalist (usually the best source these days).

I will watch interviews, especially if they are challenging with real follow-up questions.

I will watch pressers.

Rallies? Nah.

It's not a "penalty" (great choice of word - quite revealing). It's a comparison between the 2 candidates. Right now, I don't have anything from Harris to compare against Trump's performance(S) in pressers during this cycle.
