... Radio industry experts say the reason for the migration of AM programming to FM stations is purely financial.

"It comes down to economics," said Rich Hanley, journalism professor emeritus at Quinnipiac University. "Radio has morphed into a talk radio format rather than focusing on music or news."

As for simulcasting, that comes down to it being "more cost effective for radio station owners to spread one cost across two platforms," Hanley said.

While WFOX is losing their rock format, it will not result in the loss of any on-air talent or layoffs, Connoisseur Media officials said. The morning drive time show, Chaz and AJ, was a simulcast of sister station WPLR and the rest of the staff will take on other roles in the company's Connecticut cluster.

Valerie Geller, a radio consultant, said simulcasts are a recognition that "most of the radio audience has moved to FM radio." ...

I recall driving from Chicago to Cincinnati, and listening to WLW for the call of the Cincinnati Reds game. I clearly heard the entire game and the post-game program. I guess those days are over.

FM is just as unlistenable as AM these days.

The only time I ever turned on the radio was in the car, and I stopped doing that when I got an iPod. I barely did before, I had cassettes before that, and then had a portable MP3 CD player.

I don't think the antennas are even hooked up on my home systems.

"FM, no static at all."

And no signal at all.

AM signals can reach much farther than FM.

It's not about the signal it's about the audience.

Like Darth says most people don't listen to either anymore.

Personally I mostly use Sirius XM. I managed to snag a lifetime subscription and so it's free to me now.
