Most brilliant and influential musician of the 20th century. That man is responsible for influencing The Pixies, Radiohead, Weezer, Fleet Foxes, Animal Collective, I could go on and on ... Brian Wilson was the GOAT.

Sad day. Brian Wilson was a visionary. He changed the sound of pop music.

RIP.

I worked a venue for Heal the Bay back in 2007.

Brian Wilson and whoever The Beach Boys were at the time were performing for it.

At one point Brian started coughing and having some trouble, they immediately shut off his mic and kept the playback playing. After a bit of coughing and a swig of water Brian was fine and the show continued, never stopping for a moment. It was a fun night, that moment will always live in my mind.

RIP Sir. You've given what you could and brightened the lives of many.

Relatively few musicians are actual visionaries. Bach. Mozart... Scott Joplin. Miles Davis... Elvis Presley. Lennon/McCartney. Kurt Cobain.

And I would include Brian Wilson in that league. He helped create, and tremendously expanded a uniquely American Beach Music sound that will still be popular one hundred years from now. Good Vibrations may even be considered one of the ten greatest rock and roll songs ever written. I remember reading about Paul McCartney allegedly lamenting to John Lennon after first hearing that song, 'what are we supposed to now?'.

His work didn't just spring out of nothing without antecedents, but he crafted it into something instantly recognizable as his own irresistibly evocative creation. RIP

In 1963, Brian Wilson thought this was the 'perfect' song and he played it over hundred times in a row on his turntable after he bought the single. The drummer made a mistake with the song, but the resulting syncopation worked liked a charm, so the producer kept it. One of my friends is a Soviet-trained pianist with perfect pitch who effortlessly plays Chopin's Fantasie Impromptu. I used to ask her to help me with arrangements years ago. One evening I asked "D" for her expert opinion on this song and "Voila!" She, like Brian Wilson, thoroughly enjoyed it as well. This is in the key of E major: www.youtube.com

Requiescat in pace.

I didn't appreciate the Beach Boys much when I was a kid. They weren't hip enough or something. But as I got older and listened more carefully to those amazing harmonies, I grew to love them. It was like discovering a whole new band. Brian's long-awaited completion of a reworked SMiLE album in 2004 was a late-career triumph too.
