'Catastrophic' Weather Expected in Jamaica

Hurricane Melissa will make history in Jamaica with landfall today, packing catastrophic flooding, landslides and destructive winds. It will then target eastern Cuba and the southeast Bahamas.

... Reports from Air Force Reserve and NOAA Hurricane Hunter aircraft show that Melissa has strengthened since the last advisory.

The central pressure inside the 15 n mi wide eye has fallen to near 892 mb ...

According to a local TV meteorologist this morning, only six hurricanes in history of record-keeping have had a central pressure of 899mb or less.

Melissa now makes that seven.

Melissa has had 215mph guests, but not sustained.

Melissa has tied the record for highest sustained winds at landfall (185mph) with The Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 and Dorian (2019). It has also tied the 1935 storm for lowest mbar pressure (892) at landfall.
Allen (1980) achieved 190 mph sustained winds and Wilma (2005) and Gilbert(1988) had lower mbar but those storms weakened before landfall.
