Toyota has reported record profit and sales figures on the back of the weak yen and strong demand for hybrid vehicles.

Global sales topped 10.3 million units, an all-time high, buoyed by strong demand in the home market and in North America and Europe. Sales of hybrid vehicles jumped 31 percent to 3.7 million units.

I mean I get your point that many overhyped full EVs before the grid was ready.

But to say the EV hype was completely wrong isn't accurate either as Hybrids are skyrocketing.

Which kind? My understanding is that there are "full hybrids" and "mild hybrids" that are not considered EVs.

My wife has had two hybrids (Prius and Kia Niro) and we're looking to get another. She'd regularly get 50-60 mpg highway.

I've always wondered why the tech hasn't exploded more than it has.

Hybrid tech needs to develop a way to make more smoke and noise before it will be fully mainstream.

If you can't drive a 409 with 3-2s and 4 on the floor why bore yourself to death? Ok get yourself a hybrid as it wont leave you sitting and discharged and frozen in winter. I can't imagine why anyone would buy a full EV unless you have a truck that can haul a spare LI battery that is the equivalent of 5 gal can of gas and a grid that has capacity. Neither a full EV or Hybrid are efficient and pure. I drive a Highlander & Sub and HD GM PU btw

Still driving a 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid, with 137k. Looks terrible. 37 mpg.

I've had Toyota hybrids for years now... and you couldn't pry mine from my cold, dead hands.

Just remember 2 things; drive them, my dealer told me that many locals have more miles on their golf carts than their cars, lol, and the battery needs to be used at least occasionally.

And don't block the air vent to the battery. Those are about the only ways to kill them.

Speaking of golf carts and electric cars. Gas powered vs electric golf carts are perfect example of relative worth and demand of gas vs electric cars. Electric golf carts historically have declining value just like cars. I have had an EZ GO GAS powered TXT golf cart for 20 years it still runs perfectly. Gas powered versions do not depreciate if kept maintained. Battery powered worth much less as they waste away useless.

Colloquialism. Nobody called a Hybrid an EV until the advent of the Big Battery Car, which is what US consumers except from the acronym EV.

A large number of the highest performance road cars on the planet are already hybrids. LaFerrari, Porsche 918 Spyders, Merc AMG One, lotus evija.. using hardware that's been improved in Formula 1 since they adopted hybrids in 2014. The thermal efficiency of the engines went from 35% to over 50% in just 10 years and those improvements are trickling down into street cars.

The biggest inflation factor is dealer up-charges.

MSRP is not that bad.

Dealer mark-ups 10%-20% over MSRP.

No thanks.

Yes they aren't as efficient in cold weather.

But then again, neither are gas powered vehicles.
