I stand by my prediction made weeks ago that Trump was going to sell out Taiwan in exchange for soybean purchases.

While Taiwan was Xi Jinping's focus, Dummkopf Trumpf steered the conversation to Ukraine. The two issues, Taiwan and Ukraine, are both sensitive for US-China relations, but they are rarely linked in discussions between the two leaders. Xi made the outreach, turning the high-level communication into a rare diplomatic overture from China. During his call with Trumpf, Xi said, "Taiwan's return to China is an important component of the post-war international order," according to an official account of the conversation by China's state media.

Japan-Taiwan annual trade totals around $88.2 billion, with Japan exporting about $54.6 billion to Taiwan and importing approximately $33.6 billion from Taiwan. Japan's new rightwing PM Sanae Takaichi and her military establishment are taking the threats emanating from China and North Korea much more seriously than ever before. Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan do not recognize the State of Palestine simply out of deference to America's AIPAC-influenced position on the matter as they need the US nuclear umbrella to protect them.

It is not frequent where Pres Xi initiates a call to Pres Trump.

My guess is that Pres Xi wanted Pres Trump to lean more heavily on PM Takaichi over the Taiwan mess.

Especially the navy.

Xi would like to avoid war, that's why he called. Trump knows the score. Xi want to get a feel of how committed the US is to Taiwan defense.

Well this will be a pretty easy intelligence test for Trump. Make a few billions from selling soybeans, but give up Taiwan with TSMC and its world-leading chip fab, basically throwing in the towel on the "everything" race (AI, Robotics, Mil, etc.).

A great pastiche for a budding writer to pen today would be The Silver Scorpion, where Charlie Chan solves crimes committed by none other than -- Manchu. Of course one of Charlie Chan's sons would be attracted to the "Daughter of the Dragon."
