The great thing about this holiday is that it exists for everybody. Which for a lot of us is work, daily, responsibilities as well as the problems and issues that you face in your own life. But Thanksgiving Day is for all of us, and it is an important gift. It belongs to every one of us.

We're not with family this year, as they're spread around the country (Northern California, Texas, Michigan, Washington and Oregon) however, we are going out for Thanksgiving dinner (my wife doesn't do big holiday meals anymore) with three of our friends, whose families are also not close by.

Besides, we saw most all of our family just over two weeks ago in Texas at our granddaughter's wedding. And while there was no turkey or cranberry sauce, we did have a barbecue of burgers and brats and corn-on-the-cob.

origin of thanksgiving

"The 1621 harvest feast
The event: The celebration was a three-day harvest festival where the colonists and Wampanoag shared food, such as fowl, venison, and seafood. The Wampanoag, led by Chief Massasoit, were invited by the colonists and contributed five deer to the feast.

Native American involvement: The Wampanoag had a strategic alliance with the colonists and taught them how to cultivate native crops, which helped the Pilgrims survive.

The menu: The meal included dishes like fowl, venison, corn, shellfish, and stew, though they ate outside on the ground or barrels due to a lack of buildings."
