As the president graffitis his name to beloved institutions and builds monuments to his own vanity, we must focus on how much fun it will be to tear it all down.

"For now, it is enough to say that the end of Trump's presidency must be palpably different from previous changes in administrations. Detrumpification must have a visual and physical record. It must be an event and a celebration.

It must be an enduring memory and a warning to anyone who hopes to venerate authoritarian figures on American soil in the future. It must represent not just a political defeat but a societal rejection of Trumpism itself.

What Trump and his allies are doing, after all, is not really about honoring him. These tributes are meant to carry the same message as an unrepaired hole in the wall left by a violent domestic abuser's fist.

The goal is to humiliate and to intimidate anyone who didn't support him, to imply violence without leaving bruises, and to create a perpetual sense of unease, despair, and dread.

To visibly erase his image and his name from American public life would not be a distraction from moving forward but rather a prerequisite for it."

Well said.... the article is quite thorough about the reasons why.

If I may ask one question ...

When has a Federal Memorial (via a law passed by Congress) been created for a living President?

And, as a follow-up questions ...

What laws might Pres Trump be breaking in his efforts to place his name on Federal ~stuff?~

My current view is that you may be looking towards a future that may not be allowed to exist.

Desh*ttifying what Trump and his loathsome goons have ensh*ttified is a worthy task but yuuge, when you consider the depths of what is likely permanent damage already been wrought on the office and nation.

When the old man dies.

I try to imagine a nation in mourning but fail.

When Trump dies, there will be massive popular resistance to the idea that his body should repose in state in the US Capitol.

After he dies, there will arise the firm belief that wherever he is buried is unpleasantly haunted.

I'll bet anyone a five-spot on both above.
